Community Projection - Boof Bonser

Boof went from bouncing back and forth between Minnesota and Rochester last year to being the Game 2 starter in the playoffs. Needless to say, it was a pretty big year for Boof.

He was far from the most talked about farmhand going into the year, but snuck onto the scene and seems to be sticking around. How long will he stick around for and how good will he be if he sticks around?

I'm optomistic

210 IP, 4.1 ERA.

I'll leave the k/9, bb/9, and hr/9 up to the stat heads. I'm not sure what his career marks are. What I saw down the stretch was very encouraging,and his ERA from last year (because of how bad he was at the beginning of the season) hides the fact that he was very good. If he largely duplicates that, they guy will have an ERA under 4.

My wish for fans to bark his name like the Metrodome is a giant dog pound will continue to go ignored and his present cliche "Boooooooooof" chant which we already do for Lew Ford anyways will continue to disappoint me.

I like that idea in principle. You might need an NFL crowd to do that properly, though.

You're probably right, but imagine the place barking up a storm of "Boof!" after a strikeout while the infield's going around the horn. That would be so intimidating for the next hitter.

I'm optimistic on Boof...

I think he'll be the next most "solid" guy this year (after POSSIBLY Garza) and will do the following (upping his trade status tremendously for 2008):

195 IP, 3.92 ERA, 7.0 K/9, 2.8 BB/9, 1.3 HR/9

And I too will be happy with that. Very happy.

Milton

There is quite a bit of evidence to be pretty optimistic on Bonser. He struggled when he came up last year, with an inflated HR and walk rate, but then during his second go-around in the majors, the homer run and walk rates came back down, the k-rate stayed the same, and the results improved a lot. Those exact same things have happened every time he's moved up a level starting when he moved to AA. Then ever time, just as it did in the majors, after either going back down and coming back up or starting the next year at that level, the peripherals made the adjustment and he was a very good pitcher again.

Actually, I see Bonser as a lot like Milton on his above-average days, which is pretty damn good and consistent.

For hsi numbers, I'm taking the combination of his struggles and his late season hot streak and accounting for a little regression:

Bonser

32 GS, 195 IP, 4.45 ERA, 7.2 K/9, 2.3 BB/9, 1.6 HR/9

So a pretty fair share of dingers, but enough strikeouts and few enough free passes to make them not hurt TOO much.
