Community Projection - Jason Bartlett

Perhaps there was no more divisive issue last year than Castro vs. Bartlett. Regardless of which way you leaned, you probably felt strongly about this issue. Sometime last June, Castro was sent out of town, and by playing well "at the major league level," Bartlett made sure that there's no SS controversy going into this season.

Bartlett hit pretty well in the minors. Will he continue that success (and his success last season) in the majors? Will he improve above and beyond what he did last year? Or will he turn out to be a replacement level SS?

As usual, if you're submitting a projection (and please do so), just make a comment including your projected plate appearances, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging average, home runs, stolen bases, and caught stealing. Discussion/suggestions encouraged, and thanks to those who have been letting their opinions be known.

600 PA, .285/.345/.410, 5 HR, 20 SB, 10 CS

I'm a little worried about what seems to be a somewhat eroding walk rate, but I still think JB will be pretty productive and flash enough leather that we won't be pointing fingers in his direction at the end of the season.

I mainly agree...

I'll say .290 or so for average, the rest pretty similar. And he ups his doubles and sb's this year, using that speed. I'll even up his SB's to 23 this year. I think we'll see him in the 2-hole before long, unless Gardy decides to put Kubel there at some point, which I also wouldn't mind.

Bartlett...

...will be a solid shortstop defensively, better than any we have had for awhile. His bat will be similar to what he projected from the minors:

585PA, 50BB, 535AB, 165H, 33-2B, 4-3B, 4-HR, 55RBI, 18SB, 6CS, .308Ave/.368OBP/.407SLG

3 HR, 18 SB, 7 CS.

I think he'll drop off slightly at the plate, but should still be solid on D. Plenty of PAs as Gardy will be hesitant to give him time off with nothing of significance at back up.

I expect him to start slow and hit a stride as pitchers are starting to adjust to him. When he adjusts back, he'll be about where he ended up last season.

He'll have a good year...

...and Gardy will have no choice by about June to swap his and Punto's positions in the batting order.

I'll say .315/.365/.400
2 or 3 HRs
~30 2Bs
~20 SBs
and he'll lead the team in PAs with around 640 and games played at 150+ since he has no dependable backup.

Players don't usually get worse after their first season. I'm projecting a calmed down version of last year that doesn't include his spetember slum from breaking down. Go look at his splits and see how good he was until then.

650 PA .310 BA/ .390 OBP/.410 SLG 34 doubles. 4 triples. 3 homers. 18 SB's. 8 CS.

Not to mention he's a fast guy in the infield playing very solid defense.

He'll get a few extra at bats when he moves up to the 2nd spot in the lineup. Won't get .300 as pitchers will start to adjust to him the second half of the season.
