Minor League Report...June 2, 2007

After being hot last week, the four full-season teams were back playing close to .500 ball this week.  They needed to win all three games last night to finish the week one game over .500 at 14-13.

There were several transactions this week.  We all know that Kevin Slowey was called up and made his first start last night.  Kevin didn't get the win but we all saw the type of pitcher he is, congratulations Kevin on an excellent first start.  To make room for Kevin, the Twins returned reliever Julio DePaula to the Wings.  Two catchers hit the DL, Jose Morales at Rochester and Alan de San Miguel at Beloit.  The Twins moved catcher Korey Feiner up to Rochester from New Britain and Jeff Christy to New Britain from Ft. Myers.  Brian Duensing moved up to Rochester where he had an excellent first start.  Ryan Mullins was named a FSL All-Star, however, won't play in the game as he moved up to New Britain to replace Duensing.  Ryan also had an excellent first start for the Cats.  Reliever Eduardo Morlan was also named to the FSL All-Star team.  Jose Lugo and Alexander Smit were activated by the Miracle from the DL.  Last year's third round pick, Tyler Robertson moved up to Beloit from EST.

Rochester Red Wings (AAA) (4-3, 27-23)

The Wings were 4-3 and remain in second place, however, they gained a game on Buffalo who they now trail by only 1.5 games.  Will they be able to stay in the hunt as they watch several of their top pitchers move up to the Twins?

Matt Garza had two starts this week, pitching 13.0 innings with 7 hits, 3 runs and 14K/8BB.  He received a lot of attention with his comments about pitching like he wants versus what the Twins want...but whatever he does he must address 8 walks in 13 innings and 26 walks this season in 62.0 innings.  Dave Gassner had his best start of the season last Saturday when he pitched a complete game, 9.0 inning, 4 hit shutout.  Unfortunately, he couldn't follow up on Thursday when he went 6.1 innings with 9 hits, 5 runs (4 earned) and 0K/3BB.  Julio DePaula returned from the Twins getting into 1 game, 1.2 innings with no hits and 3K/0BB.  Ricky Barrett continues to say next time you need a lefty, how about me?  He pitched in 3 games this week, 5.0 innings with 3 hits, 1 run and 6K/2BB.

Jose Morales was 4 for 8 with a double and hitting a stellar .350Average before he went on the DL.  Garrett Jones had another big week and is giving notice that he wants to return to Minnesota.  This week Garrett was 9 for 25 with 4 runs scored, 4 doubles, a home run and 3 rbi.  Jones is now hitting .301Average/.518SLG.  Garrett leads the system with 31 rbi and also has 13 doubles and 7 home runs.  Tommy Watkins was 4 for 12 with a double and 4 rbi.  Alexi Casilla was 6 for 26 and is now hitting .246Average.  This week Alexi scored 3 runs, had 1 rbi and 2 stolen bases in 5 atempts.  Matt Moses hasn't played the last few games as he battles an injury and Matt Tolbert hasn't played in over two weeks due to an injury.  Many of us expected Doug Deeds to do very well in AAA, yet he has struggled to keep his average over .200.  Doug had a big week this week going 6 for 22 with 3 runs scored, 3 doubles, a home run and 4 rbi raising his average to .219.  I look for Doug to continue playing at this level which should give the Wings offense a well needed jolt.

New Britain Rock Cats (AA) (3-4, 26-22)

The Cats remain in second place, however, lost a game and a half and now trail Trenton by 6.0 games.

Brian Duensing had one game before moving up.  Brian pitched 7.0 innings with 7 hits, 4 runs (3 earned) and 8K/0BB.  Brian had a 4-1 record with a 2.66 era, 38K/7BB and 1.07WHIP in 50.2 innings before moving on.  Reliever Jay Sawatski pitched 4.2 innings in 4 games with 6 hits, 2 runs (0 earned) and 2K/3BB. Tristan Crawford flirted with a no hitter Thursday. He made two excellent starts this week, pitching 12.0 innings with 5 hits and 1 earned run.  Kyle Waldrop struggled a bit in his third start, pitching 5.1 innings with 5 hits, 3 runs and 2K/5BB.  Ryan Mullins followed up being named last week's Player of the Week with an excellent first start for the Cats.  Ryan pitched 6.0 innings with 6 hits, 2 runs and 7K/2BB.

Several Cat hitters were hot, led by former Player of the Week Felix Molina.  Felix was 13 for 28 (.464Ave) this week with 5 runs scored, 3 doubles, a triple, 2 home runs and 4 rbi...and is now hitting .297Average and .363OBP.  David Winfree was 8 for 30 with 3 runs scored, 5 doubles, a triple and 2 rbi.  David now has 18 extra base hits, nearly half of his 39 total hits.  Brian Buscher was 8 for 27 with 4 runs scored, 3 doubles and 3 rbi, while Brian's 16 doubles leads the system.  Garrett Guzman was 8 for 26 with 4 runs scored, a double, triple and 5 rbi.  Former Player of the Week Matt Allegra rebounded from an off week last week, going 8 for 24 week with 6 runs scored, 2 doubles, 3 home runs and 8 rbi.  Trevor Plouffe also had a better week at the plate, going 9 for 28 with 5 runs scored, 3 doubles and 6 rbi...raising his average to .257.  His offense was offset however by 7 errors and now has 14 which are the most of any player in the system.  Speedy Brian Roberts appears to be adjusting to AA following a week when he was 6 for 15 with 3 runs scored, 2 doubles and an rbi.

Ft. Myers Miracle (Hi-A) (3-2, 22-31)

The Miracle remained in last place, however gained a game on Sarasota who they now trail by 12.0 games.

The strength of this team is their pitching, even after losing Waldrop and Mullins to New Britain and having Alexander Smit and Yohan Pino miss time with injuries.  Oswaldo Sosa had another excellent start this week, pitching 5.2 innings with 7 hits, 3 runs (1 earned) and 5K/2BB, dropping his era to 2.54.  Jay Rainville continues his comeback and appears to be getting back to his former form with each start.  This week he pitched 6.0 innings in one start with 1 unearned run and 7K/0BB, dropping his era under 3.00 to 2.94.  Zach Ward stepped into a staring roll making 2 starts this week with 13.0 innings, 9 hits, 2 runs and 9K/2BB.  Zach now has an excellent 2.54era and 1.03WHIP.  Alexander Smit returned, pitching 1.1 inning with 1 hit, 0 runs and 2K/0BB in one relief appearance.  Closer Eduardo Morlan was named to the FSL All-Star game.  This week Eduardo earned 2 saves in 2 games with 3.0 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs and 3K/0BB.  His totals this season are 39K/3BB in 27.2 innings (1.4K/ip) with a 1.857DR.  He has had a few poor outings which caused his era to go up to 2.60 while he has an excellent 0.76WHIP.

Scoring 16 runs in 5 games means there wasn't a lot of hitting.  Top hitter Erik Lis missed several games and was 0 for 6 for the week yet remains amongst the system leaders with 12 doubles and 30 rbi.  Outfielder Dwayne White was 5 for 19 with 2 runs scored, a double and 4 rbi.  Catcher Caleb Moore was their best hitter this week, going 5 for 10 with a run scored.  Edward Ovalle was only 3 for 21 this week, however, he is amongst the system leaders with 27 rbi, 6 home runs and 3 triples.

Beloit Snappers (A) (4-4, 34-19)

The Snappers maintained their hold on first place, increasing their lead over Clinton to 2.5 games.

Jeff Manship made one start, pitching only 2.2 innings before injuring his hamstring.  The Snappers will miss Jeff who had a 1.49era, 0.71WHIP and 61K/7BB in 60.1 innings with a 1.419DR.  Alex Burnett continues pitching very well, making one start with 6.0 innings, 4 hits, 1 run and 5K/2BB.  Cole DeVries continues to pitch well, so well that he actually has a lower era (1.36) than Manship.  This week Cole made one start, pitching 6.0 innings with 4 hits, 1 unearned run and 7K/0BB.  Jesus Carnevales continues to see lots of action since his callup from EST.  This week he got into 2 games, pitching 5.0 innings with 4 hits, 2 runs (1 earned) and 5K/0BB.  Brian Kirwin also continues to impress since his promotion from EST.  Brian made 1 start this week, pitching 5.0 innings with 4 hits, 2 unearned runs and 3K/2BB.  In 10.0 innings Brian has yet to give up his first earned run.

Danny Valencia leads the system with 8 home runs.  This week he was 7 for 26 with 5 runs scored, a home run, 3 rbi and now leads the team with a .297Average.  Johnny Woodard also continues to hit well (.283Average) following a 9 for 24 week with 4 runs scored, 2 doubles, 2 home runs and 6 rbi.  Garrett Olson stepped up this week with 7 hits in 19 at bats, 3 runs, a double, home run and 2 rbi.  Top prospect Chris Parmalee was 8 for 23 with 2 runs, 2 doubles, a triple, home run and 5 rbi...raising his average to .234.  Joe Benson is tied for the system lead with 4 triples.  This week Joe was 5 for 23 with 5 runs, 3 doubles and an rbi.

Featured Player of the Week

Each year following the draft, the Twins sign several players who were undrafted and a few others from the several try out camps they hold at various locations.  Last June 19th they signed Robert Delaney out of St. Johns University.  How this big right hander was missed by 30 teams drafting 50 rounds is a question that is hard to answer.

Rob began his career in the GCL where he pitched well in 17 appearances (33.0 innings).  Rob finished his GCL season with a 1-3 record, 2 saves, 4.64era and 27K/1BB earning a late August promotion to the Miracle.  He only made 3 appearances for the Miracle, pitching 5.0 innings with a 5.40era and 3K/0BB.

Rob was as close to perfect this week as one could be.  He pitched 6.0 innings in 3 appearances, allowing 1 hit, 0 runs with 7K/0BB while earning 2 saves.

For the season, Rob has a 0.60era and 0.57WHIP while running away with the system save lead with 17.  In 30.0 innings, Rob has 35 strikeouts while allowing only 13 hits and 4 walks for an amazing 2.059DR.  It is unlikely that Delaney will remain with the Snappers all season, however, with Eduardo Morlan the closer at Ft. Myers he will also need to move up before a spot opens up for Delaney.

Great work as usual Roger. Any idea about why Morales and Tolbert are on the DL?
Get well soon, Joe.

CMath...
Tolbert is an oblique muscle strain.  Was supposed to be day-to-day and has not been put on the DL, even though it has now been about 15 days.  Read a couple places that he should be back any day?

Morales is back spasms.  He is on the DL and if I recall has had back problems in the past.  Can't remember if that is why he missed a lot of time last year or maybe was the time he missed the year before.  Real shame, cause this guy is solid on D and appears to be more than solid with the bat.

Tolbert
Matt Tolbert was in the lineup today for Rochester. 1-3 with a walk. Good to have him back!

Baseball Cards......
Bowman released their 2007 Twins rookies on cards. One is Danny Matienzo. Humm....missed that one bigtime. Otherwise, Erik Lis, Ryan Mullins, Chris Parmelee, Jay Sawatski, Kyle Asleton, Yohan Pino, Doug Deeds, Brandon Roberts, Alexi Casilla, and Brian Duensing to go with earlier released Sean Land.

Bowman
I used to buy a box of Bowman every single year when they came out, just to get a shot at all the rookies. I don't like the new rules, although I think they make sense. Lis, Mullins, Parmalee, Pino and Duensing all have a shot at being valuable cards (meaning a dollar or two!). I knew Lis was going to be in the set. I read "Mr Rookie's" article in Beckett a few months ago.

Lugo
" Jose Lugo and Alexander Smit were activated by the Miracle from the DL."

Lugo's still in Beloit, Rog.

At least they both were activated...
...and my bad, I do know that Jose Lugo is in Beloit.  At that point of the morning I was in writing mode/without brain engaged.

Hey Roger, for my own amusement...
Some True or False questions for you.  I'd like to see Seth's answers too if he reads this thread...
  1.  Chris Parmelee will be an "impact-hitter" for the Twins organization at the major league level.
  2.  Alexi Casilla will make at least two All Star Game appearances.
  3.  Anthony Swarzak can still have a successful Major League career after this spring's fiasco.
  4.  Trevor Plouffe will play in the major leagues.
  5.  Garrett Jones should have a current role on the 25-man roster.
  6.  Scott Baker will be traded before he reaches arbitration with the Minnesota Twins.
  7.  Francisco Liriano will not be another Santana-esque Ace for the Twins organization once he recovers from Tommy John completely.
  8.  Matt Moses is the third baseman of the future of the Twins organization.
  9.  The Minnesota Twins farm system will not have another major league-ready hitter (until 2009 (any player who has an MLB at-bat is excluded).
  10.  Matt Garza should be in the starting rotation for the Minnesota Twins.
Thanks!!

by Jesse on Jun 5, 2007 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

OK,
  1. It is hard to tell because there are a lot of steps to take, however, all indications are that Parmalee has what it takes to be an impact hitter.
  2. That is a tough one but I will say yes, Casilla will be a two time all-star.
  3. Anthony Swarzak's career is now in his hands, or maybe more appropriately his head.  Can he still have a successful career, yes.  Will he is another question?
  4. Trevor Plouffe will play in the major leagues.  Considering his age, his improvement this year should be exciting for all of us.
  5. Yes, Jones should be up!
  6. I seriously hope so.  Scott will not be in the 2008 rotation and I believe he will be out of options next year.  If he doesn't get it done in the next 1-2 starts my preference would be to send him down (bring Garza up), let him have 6 weeks of good pitching at AAA and to see how Garza does...then move him in late July.  We cannot lose him to waivers like Durbin.
  7. It all depends on whether he can change his delivery when throwing the slider.  It is the pitch that makes him special and possibly the pitch that caused his problems.  My guess is that he will pitch out of the bullpen in 2008 as they bring him back from the injury.  Long-term, he could be as good as Santana...but there are certainly questions until we see him throw next spring.
  8. Unfortunately, my opinion is no.  I know they still are high on him but he hasn't improved over a terrible start at Rochester and now is banged up.
  9. The likely candidates to break in next year would be David Winfree or Matt Tolbert.  My expectations are that Winfree will make it to the Twins sometime next year.  Tolbert also should see time with the Twins by Sept, 2008 at the latest.
  10. Not seeing him pitch, rather only reading about everything surrounding this young man I would need to say NO.  Now the media may have made a lot out of nothing, but he needs to develop his breaking ball and changeup if he is to be a front line starter.  I think keeping him down there was the right decision.  But his time should be getting close, hopefully, he works real hard the next few weeks to improve then gets his butt up here and joins Mr. Slowey whom I expect to have a special career.

Seth's Response (Great Questions)
Chris Parmelee will be an "impact-hitter" for the Twins organization at the major league level.

SETH: Needs to cut down on the strikeouts, but my answer as of today is TRUE.

Alexi Casilla will make at least two All Star Game appearances.

SETH: I will say TRUE because generally 2B is a weak position. He will make it on his batting average and speed, much like Castillo did in the NL a few years back. Of course, this is as much dependent up who else is in the league because if there are any power-hitting 2B, they usually get the nod, but I will stick with TRUE.

Anthony Swarzak can still have a successful Major League career after this spring's fiasco.

SETH: If by successful, you mean a career in which he gets to free agency and remains in the league a dozen years, I will say TRUE. But, I don't think he'll be an All-Star.

Trevor Plouffe will play in the major leagues.

SETH: Definitely TRUE.

Garrett Jones should have a current role on the 25-man roster.

SETH: I will say FALSE. I would like to see him maintain what he is doing now. He is still striking out a lot. That said, he certainly would be a better bat than the likes of Tyner, Ford and L-Rod.

Scott Baker will be traded before he reaches arbitration with the Minnesota Twins.

SETH: Probably TRUE, it's just a matter of how much they can still get for him. In my opinion, it isn't that Baker is bad, just that he hasn't taken advantage of his brief opportunities. I would like to see him stick in the rotation for 10-12 starts, but we all know that Garza is very close, and then the rotation looks pretty set as we wait for guys like Duensing and Mullins and Waldrop, so Baker's window with the Twins may be brief.

Francisco Liriano will not be another Santana-esque Ace for the Twins organization once he recovers from Tommy John completely.

SETH: TRUE - and it's not that I don't think he can, but Santana does set the bar pretty high, and the risk on anyone with Tommy John is so high. I do think that he can return to an all-star level.

Matt Moses is the third baseman of the future of the Twins organization.

SETH: FALSE, and yet, I do think that he will get a shot. He only has to be added to the 40 man roster after this year, and then he has three options. He is very young for AAA, and although he is a bit over his head now, the team can and should be patient with him.

The Minnesota Twins farm system will not have another major league-ready hitter (until 2009 (any player who has an MLB at-bat is excluded).
SETH: FALSE. I think Matt Tolbert will get a shot. I think the organization will 'honor' Tommy Watkins and give him a September cup of coffee. I think Oeltjen could get some time in 2008. We all know Span is going to be given every opportunity. I think Winfree will be up a little  before then. And a sort-of-sleeper would be Brock Peterson. The organization isn't completely bare of hitters. There are a few guys who could help the team in a role. Winfree has the biggest upside, in my mind, but other guys could come up and perform a role.

Matt Garza should be in the starting rotation for the Minnesota Twins.

SETH: FALSE... not quite yet. I don't know who I would take out of it. Obviously not Santana. Silva seems safe again for awhile. Bonser has done great of late with the exception of Monday night. I think we all think that Slowey will stay up and at least be given some time. Baker is the question mark. I still believe he can be a solid #4 or #5, and he is performing to that level. I want him to get a dozen starts. So, although I think Garza is ready, I don't know where you put him right now. He will be up within a month, but who will he be replacing? That is the question.

My two cents
# Chris Parmelee will be an "impact-hitter" for the Twins organization at the major league level.

True, but it will take some time. He should stay at Beloit all year and just develop until he dominates. He's starting to show signs of making better contact. When he does make contact, he has major league pop.

#  Alexi Casilla will make at least two All Star Game appearances.

False. The field of second baseman is pretty deep. If he projects to Luis Castillo ability, he would still be behind four or five good young second basemen in the AL (Roberts, Ellis, Cano, Kendrick, Barfield). He'll be a solid player, though.

#  Anthony Swarzak can still have a successful Major League career after this spring's fiasco.

True. He's got a good arm. And I think he's properly chastened. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets right back on track after the AA All-Star game and ends up in the Fall league. He's the best of the high schollers taken in the 2004 draft, IMO.

#  Trevor Plouffe will play in the major leagues.

True. He's holding his own at a very young age at AA. Like Parmalee, it'll take time. But he's playing better than many of us expected down there.

#  Garrett Jones should have a current role on the 25-man roster.

True. When Mauer gets back, there will be more need for Jones's bat than Heinz's.

#  Scott Baker will be traded before he reaches arbitration with the Minnesota Twins.

True There won't be room for him in the rotation in 2008, if not sooner. And he's too valuable to send him to the bullpen.

#  Francisco Liriano will not be another Santana-esque Ace for the Twins organization once he recovers from Tommy John completely.

False. He'll be better with stronger legs, better mechanics, more maturity, and a healthy elbow.

#  Matt Moses is the third baseman of the future of the Twins organization.

False. If his bat develops (in a couple of years), he will be pushed aside by Winfree and Valencia. He'll be a DH/Left fielder a la Garrett Jones.

#  The Minnesota Twins farm system will not have another major league-ready hitter until 2009 (any player who has an MLB at-bat is excluded).

False. Alexi Casilla, Matt Tolbert, Jose Morales, Trent Oeltjen, and David Winfree will all make major league debuts before 2009.

#  Matt Garza should be in the starting rotation for the Minnesota Twins.

True. He's better than Baker right now.

Get well soon, Joe.

Baker
I don't really understand why everyone thinks Baker is too valuable for the pen.  If he flunks out of the rotation again, i can't imagine the Twins getting much of anything useful in return for him.  I'd rather try him out as a middle-reliever before we give up on his value entirely.

I'll answer some other questions:

1. Chris Parmelee will be an "impact-hitter" for the Twins organization at the major league level.

True - It's impossible to be sure about these things, but he has legit talent and is supposed to have the batting eye to go with it.

2.  Alexi Casilla will make at least two All Star Game appearances.

True - This is also hard to say.  I'm not really sure if he'll ACTUALLY make those appearances, but I'm saying true because I think he'll be as good as Castillo, at least for awhile, and Castillo did it.  Whether he actually makes the team or not I can't say for sure, the voters are way to fickle,  but he'll be good enough that it wouldn't be unjustified.

3.  Anthony Swarzak can still have a successful Major League career after this spring's fiasco.

True - Sure, no reason why not.

4. Trevor Plouffe will play in the major leagues.

True - He'll almost definitely get that far, but I won't say it will even be more than a September cup of coffee.

5.  Garrett Jones should have a current role on the 25-man roster.

False - I don't really think he has any value as a hitter alone at this point.  When he learns to hold his own in the outfield, maybe.  i know we need a DH, but I don't think this guy is the answer.  Already doesn't make enough contact in AAA.  We'll see, but I'm not optomistic.

6.  Scott Baker will be traded before he reaches arbitration with the Minnesota Twins.

I already commented on that above.

7.  Francisco Liriano will not be another Santana-esque Ace for the Twins organization once he recovers from Tommy John completely.

True - I say true because I expect him to fully recover from surgery, as most people do nowadays, and be an ace caliber pitcher, but I will agree with the comment above that expecting him to be Santana-caliber is unlikely just because of how high that bar is set.

8.  Matt Moses is the third baseman of the future of the Twins organization.

False - No, no, a million times no.  This guy has never done anything to indicate he can be the future 3rd baseman except be drafted high.  I think Winfree is our closest hope with Valencia having more upside, but obviously further away.

9.  The Minnesota Twins farm system will not have another major league-ready hitter until 2009 (any player who has an MLB at-bat is excluded).

False - But it will be close.  Casilla doesn't count because he's had an at bat.  A few guys like Ojetlan or Jones might come up, as people have suggested, but that doesn't mean they'll be productive in the majors.  Between Winfree and Tolbert though, I bet we get something at some point in the next two years.

10.  Matt Garza should be in the starting rotation for the Minnesota Twins.

False - Unexpected answer from me, i know, but at this point I'd like to see about 3 more weeks of Baker, then we can decide.  I expect that move to be neccesary at that point though.  he's still a little inconsistent and seems to be not totally done learning how to pitch, but he'll be able to do that just as well from Anderson and Santana as from AAA hitters pretty soon.

If at any point the Twins the Twins are out of it, he should be up here almsot no matter what to prepare for next year.  I still dream of The Three Aces (TM) atop the rotation.

Yeah
If he flunks out of the rotation again

Yeah, I don't believe he will flunk out of the rotation, though. But he won't hold back a superior pitcher all year. He'll be a valuable commodity--a proven fourth or fifth starter--with no home in the rotation once Garza has demonstrated that he's ready. And I think that will be within the month. At that point, the Twins would maximize their return on their investment by trading him rather than moving him to the pen to make room for Garza. Even if they do move him to the pen, I can see them trading him in the offseason, with Liriano, Perkins and even Duensing ready to contribute in 2008.

Get well soon, Joe.

Ok
Ok, that seems reasonable.

For gaging, what about ERA would you think he'll settle at to be an acceptable 4th or 5th starter, what your expectation is?

Not knowing the inner workings...
...of how Mr. Ryan and other GM's operate, I see an offseason trade for a player without options as a lesser return.  I think to maximize the value from a Baker trade, he needs to pitch ok the next few weeks then be traded this summer.

My preference would be a surprise trade for something that will really help this team.  Perhaps one of the AA/AAA pitching prospects (Duensing, Swarzak, Waldrop, Mullins), together with Baker and Denard Span for a top line prospect at either 3B or CF.

After such an impressive spring, yes, I am losing hope that Span is our future centerfielder.  I also think that his play and the performance Torii is putting up this year will enhance the liklihood that Mr. Ryan and Torii will get a new contract signed before the season is over.

by roger @ Twinkie Town on Jun 7, 2007 7:59 AM EDT up reply actions

But...
I just don't know that he has a lot of value in trade. So, I would likely just keep him. Do we think that Silva will be in the rotation next year? I guess I don't. I expect Santana, Bonser, Garza and Slowey will be in the rotation. The last spot will likely be up for grabs between Baker, Liriano, Perkins and maybe Duensing.

Will Liriano be ready opening day, or will they ease him back in the bullpen? Will Perkins be vying for a rotation spot or a bullpen spot? If they weren't willing to give a job to Garza, Perkins or Slowey out of training camp this year, would they give one to Duensing next year? I think Baker needs to be kept around.

I think in a long-relief role, Baker may be able to provide more value to the Twins than they could get in a trade for him now.

by SethSpeaks on Jun 6, 2007 10:01 PM EDT reply actions

You make a good point
Silva might be the one that's traded to make room for Garza. In which case, you keep Baker all year and perhaps into next spring for depth.

But I do think he has more trade value than people give him credit for. His career mirrors Brandon McCarthy's and he returned John Danks in a trade. I'm not saying Baker could get that, but he might return something like Iwamura in a package.

Get well soon, Joe.

My take
#  Chris Parmelee will be an "impact-hitter" for the Twins organization at the major league level.

False - I agree with everyone he is an exciting prospect but projecting a kid at A ball to be an impact hitter at the major league level is always dicey. Chances are he won't make it.

#  Alexi Casilla will make at least two All Star Game appearances.

False - With Morneau and Mauer to compete with for the Twins guaranteed spot and the difficulty of getting elected from a medium size market I think this will be tough.

#  Anthony Swarzak can still have a successful Major League career after this spring's fiasco.

True - But he needs to grow up.

#  Trevor Plouffe will play in the major leagues.

True - Does he have to be added to the roster this fall? If so, I would expect him to get a callup.

#  Garrett Jones should have a current role on the 25-man roster.

False - where would he play?

#  Scott Baker will be traded before he reaches arbitration with the Minnesota Twins.

False - The Twins have one established starter, Santana. Baker has enough talent to hold a spot in the rotation against unproven prospects.

#  Francisco Liriano will not be another Santana-esque Ace for the Twins organization once he recovers from Tommy John completely.

False - Santana is the best pitcher in baseball. That bar is too high. I think Liriano will be back but his durability is a real question.

#  Matt Moses is the third baseman of the future of the Twins organization.

True - If by future you mean at some point in the next three or four years. I don't know that he will make it to free agency in that role.

#  The Minnesota Twins farm system will not have another major league-ready hitter (until 2009 (any player who has an MLB at-bat is excluded).

True - if by major league ready you mean someone who has an impact on the lineup. Span and Casillas are really the only candidates to make the team out of spring training next year. I don't think either one is going to have much impact with the bat for a couple years more.

#  Matt Garza should be in the starting rotation for the Minnesota Twins.

True - unfortunately he has to learn to use his other pitches first. Instead he decided to whine about that at AAA and Baker and Slowey passed him by. Whether he will still get a chance this year is doubtful. Especially after Ortiz' performance yesterday.  A couple more outings in the bullpen like that from him and Garza still won't be first in line for a rotation slot unless the Twins can trade Ortiz.
