Who Am I?

Something new today, we'll try it as an experiment and see how you like it.  Take a look at the clues below.  Can you tell me who these players are?

Who am I?

  •  I was originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals
  •  At college in back-to-back seasons, I was a Pac-10 All-Southern OF and a Summer League First-Team All American
  •  Over three seasons in the minor leagues, I made three different All Star teams
  •  My minor league OPS is .822
Who am I?
  •  I was an Olympic Baseball participant
  •  I made one minor league All Star team, eight years after I was drafted
  •  My minor league line is .309/.362/.462
  •  I was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Reds
Who am I?
  •  I hit .370/.426/.481 in my first year in the majors
  •  My World Series OPS is 1.121
  •  In high-A ball I pitched just one inning, striking out two...but my ERA is 36.00
Who am I?
  •  I was an Ivy League All Star in back-to-back seasons prior to being drafted
  •  My minor league OPS is .862
  •  At the major league level I took 268 career walks; only logged 278 career strikeouts

Hmmm..
I'm going to go with "no."  Even when I tried to cheat, I failed.

I will be mightily impressed with anyone who can come up with one of these answers.  And when they do, I would like to know how they managed it, so that I can feel less stupid next time.

Are my hints too difficult?
I tried to not "make it easy", but might have gone the other way.  I'll wait and see what other poeple say, too.

Twins?
Are these all players who are "Twins-related?" Either current or former players?

by Diggity Dino on Jan 16, 2008 1:11 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

They are all
former Twins at this point.  But they were all Twins in their career.

Answers
The first one is Jacque Jones
The last one is Gene Larkin.

Working on the other two.

You got those two right
What do you think of this game?  Something we should do from time to time?

by Jesse on Jan 16, 2008 1:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

maybe possibly...
#1 don't know. . .

#2 Chad Allen

#3 Dan Gladden's favorite punching bag, Steve Lombardozzi

#4 Gene Larkin

by Chaddens on Jan 16, 2008 1:16 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

That's right
Between you and Cmath, you got them all!

Did you like this game?  Or does it bore you?

by Jesse on Jan 16, 2008 1:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Fun Fun!
Maybe provide fewer clues. But, then again, if you do that, perhaps more than one player meets the criteria. For example, Shane Mack was all Pac-10 and first drafted by Kansas City. But his minor league OPS was not .822.

I like it
I think they are fun, although everyone else got them quite quickly.  I had Lombo but he was the only one.

The originally drafted by label threw me, since I saw Pac-10 and thought of Jacque, but he came to the Twins straight out of the draft.  Of course, I didn't think about him being drafted earlier and not signing.  Good clue.

Beat me to it
Yup, 2 and 3 are Allen and Lombo.

Contrats to Cmath and Chaddens
The answers are
  1.  Jacque Jones
  2.  Chad Allen
  3.  Steve Lombardozzi
  4.  Gene Larkin
What does everyone think?  Was this "fun", something to do once in a while?  Or was it boring and you'd put out your eyes with an olive scoop if you saw it again?

I don't understand
I could have worked for the rest of the day and not come up with these.  I'm in awe that it took people so little time to find them, that's for sure.

How else can we apply this?  "Disprove the second law of thermodynamics... go!"  We'll have physics re-written by 3:00.

Easy
Sometimes cold moves towards heat, as in convection through my window right now.

You just blew my mind.

I guess I'd go with the olive scoops, but...
Myabe if you started with an easy one and then tried to make the clues more difficult as you went on it might make it more fun for some of "the rest of us"

That's not a bad idea
Do a "tier of difficulty" kind of thing.  I can do that, good suggestion.

by Jesse on Jan 16, 2008 2:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Weird
#1 is close to Shane Mack, too. He was my guess.

Mack was drafted by the Royals initially, and was Pac-10 outfielder (UCLA). Not sure about the rest.

Of course...
I now see cmathewson brought up the same thing much, much earlier.

Carry on.

dot dot dot
I like this game

I thought the second was Dougie Baseball. oops

Love the game but maybe one suggestion
If you're trying to incorporate difficulties maybe you could do something like the super quiz in the Star Tribune (I'm sure it's published across the country but that is probably the major newspaper for most here).

Anyways, you could always do 3 tiers of difficulty with how many players you feel like at each tier.

I didn't think the idea of hints getting easier was bad, the only thing with that being if you accidentally skip ahead (or your eyes get impatient) it doesn't give it away.

Keep up the nice work Jesse.

The tier idea
is a good one, one I'll definitely go with next time around.  The hints probably won't change within each player (each player won't have tiers of hints), I'll probably end up having a couple "easier" players with "easier" hints, a couple intermediate players and then a couple difficult choices.

by Jesse on Jan 17, 2008 12:41 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
I think that would be really interesting.  I look forward to the next one.
