Starting Pitchers
Those are Washburn's numbers since joining the Tigers. Suffice it to say it wasn't a pretty start, and I'm sure Detroit management were shaking their heads thinking: this isn't what we paid for. Still, it's just one start, and Washburn has yet another opportunity to continue upon what's been one of his best seasons this afternoon against the Twins. His fastball has been by far his best pitch this season, thanks in no small part to the fact that he throws so many pitches for strikes, and in particular that good slider. He's been great against the Twins so far this year, throwing a combined 14 innings over two starts, allowing just one run.
Since the beginning of June, Baker has started 12 games for a total of 74.2 innings. In that span he's struck out 67, walked 17 and allowed just 65 hits (six for home runs). His ERA in this period? A very respectable 3.37. This is the guy the Twins meant to sign to that extension over last winter, and pitching for a team with its collective back against the wall here's hoping that's the Baker that shows up this afternoon.
