Know Thine Enemy: Bless You Boys
Oliver was roughed up his last time out, but he was solid in his two previous starts, which included a six-inning two-run performance at Target Field. Suffice it to say that this time, the Twins are hoping for more than a pair of runs while Oliver's on the hill.
A good mid-90s fastball, a decent slider and an occasional changeup make up his arsenal. None of them are great, and at times Oliver struggles for location which can make for some long plate appearances. If there's one thing to be wary of, although it won't garner many swings and misses that changeup is thrown so rarely that it gets hitters out in front of it pretty easily, leading to a lot of chases. But if our hitters can slow down with it, we should see some hard-hit off-speed pitches.
Pavano likes to get ahead early, and then play around with hitters a bit and try to get them to swing at borderline pitches. It often works. He has good command on his pitches and is very efficient, which helps him work deep into ballgames. We need all of these tendencies to play for him again today.
Game notes and lineups after the jump...and I should warn you, it doesn't look good...
- Joe's out today with a sore shoulder. THE ALL-STAR BREAK CAN'T COME FAST ENOUGH.
- This means no Justin and no Joe in a game that will either cause us to lose 3 games to the Tigers this series, or just 1. It's not a bad decision, I'm not arguing that they should play today...it's just really bad timing. Again.
- Gardy and Blackburn are having a chat today. I wonder what that's about?
- In fact, the Twins are holding a meeting in general today. I wonder what that's about?
- A "journalist" we all despise 98% of the time suggested trading Delmon Young. That's all I'm going to say about it, and I probably shouldn't have even mentioned it at all.
