Twinkie Town 2011 Top 50...Prospect #47

New, 5 comments

Pedro Guerra collected 113 of the 183 votes (60%) in the run-off for the Forty-Sixth spot in this year's poll. Shooter Hunt will join all but Logan Darnell, who collected only eight votes, for the next round. Darnell put up similar numbers as Pat Dean at Elizabethton, yet, hasn't been able to garner votes and won't be a part of this year's Top 50. In the original voting, Hunt finished two votes ahead of Guerra and eleven votes ahead of a young man who has had an impressive winter in Venezuela, Cesar Ciurcina.

Added to the next round will be two left handed relief pitchers. The first is Paul Bargas, a 22 year old out of Cal-Riverside who the Twins recently acquired from Colorado in the Jose Morales trade. Bargas, who was the Rockies thirteenth round pick in 2009, had a 5-4 record with a 3.59 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 67.2 innings at Asheville of the Sally League last summer. I believe the Sally League is similar to Beloit and it is likely Bargas will move up to Ft. Myers this spring. Spencer Steedley was the top left handed reliever in the organization a year ago, before injuries caused him to miss nearly all of the 2010 season. Steedley was a 2009 Florida State League All-Star where he had a 4-0 record with a 1.79 ERA in 50.1 innings before moving up to New Britain where he had a 3.38 ERA in 18.2 innings. That performance earned him a trip to the 2009 Arizona Fall League. Steedley was injured shortley after spring training, limiting him to 10 games with a 3.00 ERA in 18.0 innings with 19 strikeouts. If Steedley can come back healthy, he will again be one of the top lefthanded relievers in the upper levels of the organization.

This round will remain open through 3pm, Thursday, February 10th. For your information, the last six rounds went to: 41) Bobby Lanigan; 42) Evan Bigley; 43) Nate Roberts; 44) Matt Bashore; 45) Tony Davis; and 46) Pedro Guerra.
