|2011 - Brad Penny||4-4||10||10||0||0||0||0||62.2||58||32||31||6||22||27||4.45||1.28|
Over his first four starts, it looked like the Tigers were going to regret bringing in Penny to flesh out their rotation. But since then he's recorded four quality starts in six appearances, cutting his ERA in half and going 4-2 in the process.
Starting in 2010, Penny has been getting a lot more ground balls. It's continued this year, which is interesting because he's throwing a lot more of his fastball (47.2% in 2010, 62.2% in 2011) in spite of losing quite a bit of velocity (94.1 mph in 2010, 91.9 mph in 2011). But the bread and butter of Penny, regardless of this change, is retiring batters off balls in play. If the Twins can make some good contact today, which Penny has avoided quite well over the last month or so, then they'll have a good chance to score some runs today.
|2011 - Nick Blackburn||4-4||10||10||1||0||0||0||64.2||65||28||23||8||20||35||3.20||1.31|
You know that Penny is having a tough time missing bats when Blackburn has a better strikeout rate than he does.Anyway, we all know how hot Blackburn has been this month. After an April in which he struggled, Nick's May ERA is a miniature 1.74 as opponents have hit just .215.
