Game 133: Tigers at Twins

First Pitch: 1:10pm CDT
TV: FSN
Radio: Twins Radio Network
Know Thine Enemy: Bless You Boys

Hopefully everyone on the Eastern seaboard is safe, now that Irene is calming down. I'm in Boston and right now it's not too bad. Some wind, some rain, but considering where we thought this storm was going to be just two days ago it's not too bad. I'll consider myself lucky.

  • Matt Tolbert has been optioned to Rochester, with Rene Rivera getting the recall. Why don't the Twins just shut down Mauer for the year and give him a few extra weeks to just recoup and then get ready for next spring?
  • Speaking of Mauer, it sounds like he's making major changes to his workout regimen and conditioning routines this winter. I think we're all happy to hear that.
  • What are your top 3 priorities for the Twins going into 2012? My include: infield depth at SS & 2B; at least 1 SP; at least 1 RP.

Onto today's game with pitchers and lineups after the jump!

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2011 - Brian Duensing 8-13 27 25 1 1 0 0 146.0 177 90 83 20 45 104 5.12 1.52

Duensing is one of the pitchers who is essentially auditioning himself for the start of 2012. Gardy likes Brian, and he likes Blackburn, but if neither of them can put together a decent final five weeks then their roles might be redefined next spring.

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2011 - Brad Penny 9-9 25 25 0 0 0 0 151.1 176 83 81 17 48 60 4.82 1.48

I'm not sure that the Tigers could have expected much more than they've gotten from Penny this season. He reminds me in some ways of Pavano in that sense. He's a veteran who will give the team a projectible performance, even if that performance isn't anything better than league average (give or take).
