Wednesday Morning Links: Phillies Coach Opening, Manny, Posting System Changes, and Arroyo.

John Sommers II

I'd make a Hot Stove pun right now, but you've probably already heard all of them and free agency has barely started.

  • Until the Twins get a major league-caliber pitching staff, I imagine this same thing would happen if Rick Anderson were to leave or be fired. The Phillies are having trouble hiring a new pitching coach because no one wants the job. They've already interviewed 8 candidates and have at least 3 say "no thanks" to them.
  • Manny Ramirez apparently isn't done with baseball as he still wants to play in either MLB or Japan next year. Judging by the fact that he's only received minor league offers in the past couple years and even had a stint in Taiwan, I think his realistic options are either Japan or retire.
  • There will likely be changes to the Japanese posting system, and they seemingly were going to be huge but now we've learned that they may actually be pretty minor in comparison. It sounds like the winning bid will now be an average of the two top bids (cancelling out a team going rogue and bidding a huge amount for a player), and also it's possible for teams to be fined if they win a bid but do not sign the player. Hindsight is 20/20, but the Twins probably should have been fined for succeeding in signing Tsuyoshi Nishioka.
  • We're already aware of the Twins' interest in Bronson Arroyo, and while he'd probably be a mediocre signing, I'd be okay with it simply because of his multiple arm angles and his mesmerizing leg kick (best view at 0:28 in the video). Hey, I need to be entertained during the 2014 season, okay?
