Pregame: Notes and Starting Pitchers for Angels @ Twins

Mike Pelfrey will be taking the mound against the Angels' Jason Vargas in what looks to be another chilly night at Target Field.

The big question tonight for Twins fans is whether starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey--who had Tommy John's only eleven months ago--really is ready to pitch again as he claims. The self-proclaimed "horse" looked more like a My Little Pony in his last start in Kansas City where he lasted only two innings, giving up six earned runs on eight hits. Pelfrey did very well in his first start of the season against Detroit, so hopefully a return to the uber-cold Target Field will be in his favor.

Taking the mound against the Twins is left handed pitcher Jason Vargas. Vargas similarly had a good first start of the season and a rougher second one, but not to the extremes of Pelfrey. Vargas lasted 5.2 innings in both starts, giving up only one earned run in the first start and 5 in the second. The Angels are hoping Vargas can pitch a little deeper into the game tonight, but with the chilly weather at Target Field that might not be possible.

Notes

  • Where's Oswaldo? In case you missed it, Wilkin Ramirez hurried back from paternity leave and so phenom prospect Oswaldo Arcia was sent back down to AAA. (Thanks to ColossusOfRhode for the fun picture!)
  • Pedro Florimon has reached base safely in all nine games he has played in and currently sports an .481 OBP. Maybe he could try hitting lead-off to give Aaron Hicks a break?
  • RHP Tim Wood began his 30-day rehab assignment with the Miracle today.
  • Here's a picture from beat writer Mike Berardino of Gardy working with the middle infielders this afternoon.
