My nine-year-old self reviews the 2013 Twins

If my nine-year-old self was here today, I think I know what he'd say - and I think he'd tell me to lighten up.

Marilyn Indahl

The Twins are off to an unexpected 4-2 start, one that's been a breath of fresh air for all of us who expected 100 losses and something on the order of unceasing agony from this season. Perhaps I'm just too jaded to see things without the jaundiced eye that I employ when watching the Twins. Perhaps I need someone young and optimistic.

For that, let's bring in Past Jon, who is nine years old. Here's what he had to say:

"Old me wanted me, I mean young me, to talk about Mike Pelfrey and Vance Worley and Kevin Correia. But I don't know who any of those guys are because I don't have any of their baseball cards yet this year. I got Kent Hrbek, though. I had to trade Ken Griffey Jr. AND Eric Davis to my brother to get him! But Hrbek is my favorite.

"We have actual baseball in Summer Rec this year, not T-Ball! The coaches pitch but we get to actually hit. I want to play catcher because I really like it and the ball comes to you all the time. I'm not sure if my glasses will fit under the catcher's mask, though. My friend's dad is the coach but he doesn't have the mask for me to try on yet. I got a catcher's glove for my birthday this year but my birthday is in December so I haven't gotten to use it.

"Old me says that the Twins might trade some of their players this year. I don't like when guys get traded, because they have to move to a different town.

"I like going to Twins games because it's fun. The Metrodome is nice because when it rains, they still have the game. I have been to three games but the Twins only won one of them, and one time Kirby Puckett didn't play center field because he left his glove on a plane.

"Old me seems kind of angry about the Twins, and I don't know why. He says he doesn't collect baseball cards any more, even though he can afford to buy like ten packs every week. And he says that every game is on TV! We only get to watch the games when they're on Channel 3 or 13, and the rest of them are on Channel 27, which they get in Milbank but not here. The Braves are on all the time and if I'm home sick from school I can watch the Cubs usually, and sometimes the Mets are on too. Old me says he still can watch all those games AND there's a channel that just shows baseball games and highlights AND they have a thing that would let him watch ALL the games.

"And old me said that I don't have much time, but if I can, I need to disable Eric Fox. I don't know what he means.

"But he says that he goes to games all the time, and he writes about the games sometimes, and he gets to watch them all if he wants, even sometimes when he's at work. It sounds great. Except for the baseball cards."

Thanks, past Jon. And if any of you need me, I'll be over here, making sure my catcher's glove is in shape for this season, just in case.
