Jack Nyhus, 33, can’t understand why the Twins are still getting ripped for not spending on free agency, in the wake of the Ervin Santana and Ricky Nolasco signings of the last two off-seasons.
Alex Goodman, 47, can’t understand why everyone is so excited that the Twins are just now moving to the middle of the pack, spending-wise.
Both were surprised to learn that they were both correct in their assessment.
"Wait a minute, really?" asked Nyhus, a lifelong Minnesotan and New Brighton resident. "It seems like those two concepts are entirely incompatible. Unless we’re just talking past each other, which…" Nyhus’ voice trailed off, as he stroked his goatee and looked contemplatively out his window.
"That can’t be right," said Goodman, another Minnesota native, flatly. "It just can’t be. I mean, you can either, I mean…" Goodman also seemed to become lost in thought, and ran his fingers through his full beard as he stared at the laptop in his Minneapolis apartment.
Both men were reacting to this tweet by minor local internet sports-and-entertainment personality "RandBall’s Stu":
It's possible that "The Twins are spending money!" and "They need to do more!" are both correct takes. Probable, even. #SMELLBASEBALL— The Least Of Steve N (@RandBallsStu) December 11, 2014
"I mean, that makes a ton of sense," said Goodman. "Like, they are spending money, which is good, but more work needs to be done."
"Stu’s logic is breathtaking, frankly," agreed Nyhus. "They’re giving out big contracts to starting pitchers, which is inherently risky, and they deserve credit for that. At the same time, they need to keep improving the team."
"Stu is wise," concluded both men.
