After an hour-plus rain delay, Phil Hughes finally came back to earth on Friday night, giving up five runs in six innings to the plucky/upstart-y Houston Astros, and they were able to make the lead hold up in a 5-4 victory over the Twins.
Most of the damage was done via three 'Stros dongs, courtesy of Marwin Gonzalez, Matt Dominguez and George Springer. Noted baseball meme Jose Altuve accounted for their other RBI. Hughes still finished with 7 Ks vs. 0 BBs, so he wasn't a Correia-level shitshow. Just a night where the fly balls flew a little farther than they should have.
Meanwhile, Dallas Kuechel held the Twins in check in his six innings of work, scattering five hits and striking out six. When the Houston bullpen took over, Minnesota's furious comeback began. An Aaron Hicks double and a 2-run Danny Santana dong off reliever Tony Sipp shrunk the lead to 5-3 in the 7th, and an Ed Escobar double in the 8th made it a one-run game. A 2-out rally in the ninth off closer Chad Qualls ended with a Josh Willingham pop-up.
Crap.
