Twins designate Jason Kubel for assignment

And the shoe drops.

Jason Miller

In the wake of yesterday's news that the Twins had signed Kendrys Morales, we knew it was only a matter of time until spots were cleared on the 25 and 40-man rosters. The organization has answered both questions in one move by designating Jason Kubel for assignment.

Kubel hit very well in the early portions of the season, collecting at least one hit in each of his first eight starts and hitting .288/.360/.425 in April. Since then he's hit just .158/.264/.158. That's no extra base hits and 33 strikeouts in 87 plate appearances. Ouch.

The move clears the way for Morales onto the roster, as he'll be joining the team immediately, but it is yet to be determined if this is the final move as a result of the new signing. If the Twins believe Morales will take more time away from Josmil Pinto, and with the eventual return of Sam Fuld on the horizon, there could be more roster moves to be made in the coming days.
