In a corresponding move to the Sam Fuld to Oakland for Tommy Milone trade, the Twins have called up slugging first baseman Kennys Vargas. Vargas has hit .281/.360/.472 in Double-A.
Vargas, who turns 24 tomorrow, is a switch-hitting behemoth out of Puerto Rico. Minnesota added him to the 40-man roster over the winter to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, and they've been rewarded for their faith.
At this point, I have to assume that the Twins will go forward with Vargas taking plate appearances as either the starting first baseman or designated hitter. His defensive skills leave something to be desired, but if he reaches his potential at the plate his lack of defensive prowess will hardly matter.
Unless he fails miserably, #MNTwins official says Vargas call-up is more a long-term thing. Not Polanco-like.

Welcome to Minnesota, Kennys Vargas. Suit up, because you'll be playing quite a bit.
