This year, Kyle Gibson has either been really, really good, or he's been awful. Today was an example of the former as he allowed only one run in 7 2/3 innings as the Twins beat the Astros 3-1.
There wasn't much that was flashy about Gibson, but he was able to navigate out of threats throughout the game. There were four times in the game that the Astros were able to get two runners on with less than two outs, and the first three times Gibson was able to keep them scoreless. However, he did give up a run in the 8th when Chris Carter was able to bloop an RBI single into left field, but other than that, Houston was unable to touch him.
On the offensive side, the Twins weren't doing much against Astros starter Brett Oberholtzer, either. They too had a few threats going throughout the game, but all of theirs early on came with two outs and they didn't have any clutch hitting. However, they finally took a lead in the 6th inning when Oberholtzer tried to go inside to Joe Mauer with a fastball but didn't get it in enough, and Mauer drove it into the right-center bullpens for a home run and a 1-0 lead.
The bullpen for the Astros has been shaky this series and it continued today. Oberholtzer was pulled after 7 strong innings in favor of Josh Fields, and much like two days ago, Fields had a tough time retiring the Twins. Danny Santana led off with a single, then was advanced to third on a double by Brian Dozier. Fields intentionally walked Mauer to load the bases and face Kenny Vargas, but on a full count offering Vargas slapped a 2-run single into left-center field to make the score 3-0. While the Twins were unable to tack on any more runs, that was all they needed as Glen Perkins shut the door on the Astros in the 9th.
