Twins Give Up Late Runs In 5-4 Loss

The Twins seemed to have this in the bag, but Glen Perkins blew a save and Anthony Swarzak gave up a run in the 10th.

Typically you figure the Twins have the win in hand whenever Glen Perkins takes the mound, but it wasn't the case yesterday. With a 4-3 lead, Perkins gave up a leadoff double to Yonder Alonso, and later a sacrifice fly by Everth Cabrera tied the score. Then in the 10th inning, Anthony Swarzak allowed a leadoff home run to Seth Smith, and that was it for the Twins in a 5-4 loss to the Padres.

The Twins did start the scoring right away in the first inning when Trevor Plouffe hit a hanging breaking ball from Odrisamer Despaigne off the top of the left field fence and into the stands for a 2-0 lead. The score remained close all game, and the Twins took a 4-3 lead in the 6th thanks to an RBI single from Plouffe that scored Danny Santana from second base.

To be fair though, the Twins were walking the tightrope once starter Kevin Correia left the game. Brian Duensing started the 7th by allowing a leadoff hit and walk, but Jared Burton and Eric Fryer got the Twins out of the threat. With nobody out and Alexi Amarista attempting to bunt, Amarista missed at Burton's first pitch. Fryer saw that Yonder Alonso had strayed too far off 2nd base, and was able to pick him off for the first out. Amarista then lined out to right field, and then Everth Cabrera grounded out to Burton to end the inning.

In the 8th, Burton got into his own mess when he gave up a one-out walk and single, but then got Jedd Gyorko to pop out and then struck out Will Venable. The Twins almost did win it in the 9th when Eduardo Escobar lifted a deep fly ball to center field with runners on first and second and two away, but center fielder Amarista was able to run it down and make a sliding catch in front of the warning track. That would be it for the Twins as the Padres scored the game-winner in the next half-inning.
