For a while there, it seemed like we'd have to suffer through another bad Kyle Gibson start. He allowed 4 runs in the first two innings, including blowing an early 3-2 lead after the Twins offense eliminated an early 2-0 deficit with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Especially with the runs coming off David Price, it seemed that if Gibson could just keep it together for 6 innings, the Twins would have a shot at winning.
Well, Gibson did give up that lead immediately in the second inning, but from there he did exactly what the team needed. The Tigers couldn't touch him afterwards and he did complete 6 innings, allowing the offense to wear down Price. His pitch count was high for most of the game and he did tire in the 6th after he was already over 100 pitches. The Twins strung together a bunch of extra base hits when Aaron Hicks doubled, then came home with the tying run on a double by Danny Santana. Brian Dozier missed a home run by inches off reliever Al Alburquerque - the ball bounced off the very top of the fence by the bullpens - but still had a triple to give the Twins a 5-4 lead, and then Joe Mauer added an insurance run with a double of his own off Kyle Ryan, the third pitcher of the inning. They did tack on two more runs in the 8th inning, but they weren't necessary as Jared Burton shut the door in the 9th inning.
