Rain Doesn't Stop May From Earning First Major League Victory In 10-4 Win

Trevor May continued to show improved control in making his best start of his young career.

Hannah Foslien

This was more like what we expected out of Trevor May. Even though he only lasted 5 innings thanks to a short rain delay (he had only thrown 78 pitches) he pitched far better than he has in any start this season. While the 6 strikeouts were definitely a plus, the big story was that he walked only one batter, continuing a trend where he's walked only 2 batters in his last 3 starts, spanning 15 innings.

The Twins jumped on John Danks right away in the first by getting three consecutive hits. Danny Santana led off with a single, Eduardo Nunez followed with an RBI triple, and then Joe Mauer had an infield single to score Nunez. The Twins would also get back-to-back doubles from Josmil Pinto and Oswaldo Arcia after a Kennys Vargas double play grounder to make the score 3-0.

The score held up until the White Sox offense woke up in the 4th. May issued his lone walk of the game before allowing a second deck home run to Dayan Viciedo to cut the lead to 1. The Sox then tied it in the 5th thanks to some more control issues for May. He allowed a single to Marcus Semien and then allowed him to advance to 2nd base on a wild pitch, though blame should be doled out to Pinto for attempting to block a pitch in the dirt with only his glove. May then gave up an RBI single that tied the game.

While the Twins were batting in the 5th, the rain started to fall and there even was a 16-minute rain delay as a quick storm developed and passed. Once it was gone, the Twins took over the game by scoring 5 runs, allowing Gardy to end May's night with a chance to earn the win.
