The Twins getaway lineup today featured not-Mauer, not-Hunter, and not-Suzuki. Somewhat predictably, Johnny Cueto had very few problems getting outs today.
The Twins first threat came in the 2nd inning when Trevor Plouffe and Kennys Vargas led off with singles. Then #6 hitter Chris Herrmann popped up a bunt for an out, Danny Santana struck out and Shane Robinson flew out to end the inning.
On the other side of the hill, Trevor May was able to leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the second by striking out Eugenio Suarez, Johnny Cueto, and getting Billy Hamilton to line out. The Reds second and decisive run came in the 5th (with runners at 1st and 2nd) when Chris Herrmann's throw to 3rd sailed and allowed Billy Hamilton to score. Herrmann thought he had caught the third strike when it was really called ball four, so it was a needless throw to 3rd. It wasn't always pretty or efficient for May, but he was able to go 6.1 IP with 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 6 K, 3 BB.
The only run of the game for the Twins came in the 6th, after Dozier doubled, was moved over by Nunez, and then Rosario got the ground out RBI. Cueto silenced the bats from that point on, going 8 IP and giving up just 4 hits, striking out 8 and walking 1.
Aroldis Chapman closed out the ninth and, in a fitting end, Torii Hunter was robbed by the pesky Billy Hamilton on a diving catch for the last out.
NOTES:
-Shane Robinson was hit by a pitch and stayed in to run, but was later replaced by Eduardo Escobar.
Vargas optioned to AA Chattanooga. Corresponding move tomorrow
