In the first inning, Danny Santana bunted his way on to first base with one out. Unfortunately, he then managed to get caught stealing when Buck Showalter called for a pitch out and Jimenez nabbed him, which left the bases empty when Mauer hit a solo HR. It was beautiful. 1-0 Twins.
Top of the 2nd, Eduardo Escobar scored after notorious serial killer, John Ryan Murphy got his first hit as a Twin and moved him into scoring position and then an E3 on a Buxton ground ball brought him home. 2-0 Twins
Hughes, who was flying smoothly for the first three innings, hit some turbulence in the bottom of the 4th. A lead-off double by Reimold and a single by Machado put runners on the corners for the O's. Hughes came back from that to strike out Davis, got Trumbo to fly out and Hardy to ground out. Whew! Still 2-0 Twins.
Twins batters went down 1-2-3 in the 5th and 6th innings. Machado hit a solo HR to left centerfield in the 6th. 2-1 Twins.
In the bottom of the 7th things started getting rough for the Twins. Back to back singles by Trumbo and Hardy once again put runners on the corners for the O's with no outs. Then...
Then the rain gods looked down on the Twins and smiled. They opened the clouds and began blowing rain sideways. It looked like the game might be called due to rain. But rain gods are fickle creatures, and the tarp came off and the game picked up where it left off.
Trevor May came in, slipped on the muddy mound, according to Dick 'n Bert, and threw a wild pitch allowing Trumbo to score. The ground crew came in and salted the earthen mound so nothing will ever grow there again. May struck out Alvarez but Schoop hit a grounder to left field that scored Hardy. Caleb Joseph, the man with the backwards name, hit a liner to Mauer giving him an unassisted double play to end the inning, but the damage was done. Twins now trailed 3-2.
Mauer almost hit a second home run in the 8th, but it fell just short for a fly out. Sano hit a single, Nünez was brought in as a pinch runner, but he got caught stealing and that was that. Show-off Joey Rickard hit a solo HR in the bottom half making it 4-2 Orioles.
Darren "D-Day" O'Day came in for the Orioles in the 9th and struck out the side in short order.
