This week we go into the Minnesota Twins minor league organization to find the shining talent that we name the Minor League Stars of the Week. Read on to see who we have named for this week's stars and take a moment to answer the poll and comment on any other players you feel that should have been named.
Cedar Rapids Kernels (A - Low) - A.J. Murray (C) - Our star for the Kernels this week is A.J. Murray, catcher for Cedar Rapids. While all the talk in terms of catchers in the Twins minor league system usually revolves around Stuart Turner and Mitch Garver, there is another name starting to appear on the radar and that is A.J. Murray from the Kernels. This past week A.J. hit .375 (9/24) with 9 R, 3 2B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 3 BB, and 1 SB. Throw in the fact that he has shown to be a solid defensive player in Cedar Rapids and Twins fans may want to keep their eye in this backstop in 2016.
Fort Myers Miracle (A - High) - Nick Gordon (SS) - This week's star from Fort Myers is Nick Gordon, shortstop for the Miracle. Nick has already appeared on the Minor League Stars of the Week more then once this season and that's exactly what Twins fans were looking for with Gordon making the move up to Fort Myers. Gordon continues to be an offensive threat as on the week Nick hit .400 (10/25) with 4 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, and 1 SB. The Twins have been looking for that shortstop of the future and while Gordon is a little ways away from being in Minneapolis, he is showing that the Twins made the right call with that draft choice.
Chattanooga Lookouts (AA) - Zach Granite (OF) - Our star from the Lookouts this week is Zach granite, outfielder for Chattanooga. Granite is the type of minor league player that you definitely like to pull for as he has been overshadowed some when playing in Cedar Rapids and in Fort Myers. Zach definitely stepped out of the shadows and into the sunlight this past week, hitting .417 (10/24) with 5 R, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 BB, and 4 SB. I definitely like the speed and base stealing threat that Granite possesses and if he can continue to be a steady offensive hitter, he brings a need for the Twins in another outfielder that can cover ground and wreak havoc on the bases.
Rochester Red Wings (AAA) - Kennys Vargas (1B) - This week's star from the Red Wings is Kennys Vargas, first baseman for Rochester. Now I know that a fair amount of Twins fans are not enamored with Vargas after past stints in Minnesota but in looking at what he is doing in a Red Wings uniform, Kennys is starting to show the power and run production that the Twins were expecting from him when signing him. Vargas has been electric this past week, hitting .458 (11/24) with 6 R, 1 2B, 4 HR, 10 RBI, and 2 BB. Those four home runs are one each in four straight games from Sunday through Wednesday so the power consistency is starting to show. It will be interesting if Vargas continues hitting like this to see what the Twins will do already having Mauer at first base and Park backing Joe up on off days. Stay tuned!
