We would like to interrupt this terrible season with some good news!
Joe Mauer has been awarded the AL Player of the Week award for his performance at the plate last week (May 23rd-29th). Joe slugged 4 home runs, and went 11-25 (.440) with 7 RBI. This included a 3 game HR streak, which was the second of his career.
Somewhat surprisingly, this is only his 3rd POW award. His last one came in his MVP season of 2009.
His great week at the plate was refreshing, as it followed a 3 week slump where he hit just .148/.235/.197. His BABIP over that stretch was just .190, though, suggesting he may have had some bad luck thrown in as well.
The week brought his triple slash of .260/.374/.353 up to .281/.389/.427. Though I wouldn't expect Mauer to return to his MVP form, I wouldn't be shocked if he returns to his old .320-hitting (or, .300+) self this year.
