This week we go into the Minnesota Twins minor league organization to find the shining talent that we name the Minor League Stars of the Week. Read on to see who we have named for this week's stars and take a moment to answer the poll and comment on any other players you feel that should have been named.
Cedar Rapids Kernels (A - Low) - Miles Nordgren (P) - Our star for the Kernels this week is Miles Nordgren, starting pitcher for Cedar Rapids. Nordgren put together an impressive start this past Saturday, although he still did not get a decision in the contest. Miles pitched seven innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run. Nordgren struck out twelve batters in the game while not walking a single hitter. Even more impressive is the fact that Miles has struck out eight or more batters in three of his last four outings. With Randy LeBlanc now promoted to Advanced A Fort Myers, Nordgren is going to have the chance to flourish and shine at Cedar Rapids in 2016.
Fort Myers Miracle (A - Advanced) - Tyler Jay (P) - This week's star from Fort Myers is Tyler Jay, starting pitcher for the Miracle. Jay is starting to round into form in Fort Myers and is starting to show what the Twins organization saw in Tyler when they made him the first round draft pick in 2015. Jay put on a clinic with his start on Tuesday, getting the win for the Miracle. Tyler pitched eight innings allowing just two hits and no runs. Jay struck out eleven batters in the contest while walking only one. Add to this the fact that Tyler has struck out six or more batters in his last five starts and it doesn't look like it will be long before he is promoted to Chattanooga. Stephen Gonsalves is still in front of Jay for that next promotion but I strongly suspect that with continued performance, we will see Jay in Chattanooga in 2017.
Chattanooga Lookouts (AA) - Travis Harrison (OF) - Our star from the Lookouts this week is Travis Harrison, outfielder for Chattanooga. Harrison has been one of the top hitters for the Lookouts in 2016, second on the team in batting average and third on the team in runs batted in. For the past week, Travis has been batting .292 (7/24) with 4 runs scored, 7 runs batted in, 2 doubles, and 1 triple. Chattanooga continues to battle back after a slow start to 2016 and Harrison has been one of the key cogs to lead the charge. Look for Travis to be in Rochester in 2017.
Rochester Red Wings (AAA) - Eddie Rosario (OF) - This week's star from the Red Wings is Eddie Rosario, outfielder for Rochester. Rosario had a very rough start to the season in 2016 with the Twins but since being sent back to the Red Wings, he has been looking more like the player that Minnesota fans watched play at Target Field in 2015. For the past week, Eddie has been batting .433 (13/30) with 3 runs scored, 8 runs batted in, 3 doubles, and 1 home run. The defense has also been solid with no errors committed since being sent back to Rochester. The Twins front office definitely wants to see this over a larger scale of time but if Rosario keeps it together and playing like he is now, I could see him back in Minneapolis in July.
