This week we go into the Minnesota Twins minor league organization to find the shining talent that we name the Minor League Stars of the Week. Read on to see who we have named for this week's stars and take a moment to answer the poll and comment on any other players you feel that should have been named.
Cedar Rapids Kernels (A - Low) - Sean Miller (SS) - Our star for the Kernels this week is Sean Miller, shortstop for Cedar Rapids. Miller has been an offensive force for the Kernels this past week, batting .391 (9/23) with 3 R, 2 2B, and 6 RBI. Sean is hitting .285 at Cedar Rapids for the 2016 season and is fourth on the Kernels roster in RBI and 3B. Miller will be interesting to watch if this play continues in 2016 as Nick Gordon projects to move to Chattanooga in 2017. Will Miller then get promoted to Fort Myers?
Fort Myers Miracle (A - Advanced) - Stephen Gonsalves (P) - This week's star from Fort Myers is Stephen Gonsalves, starting pitcher for the Miracle. Gonsalves is not new to the Minor League Stars of the Week column and when he has starts/weeks like this, he will continue to appear here. Gonsalves had one start this past week and it was a good outing, hurling seven innings while allowing just three hits and one earned run. The strikeouts were there again for Stephen as he struck out eight hitters while walking none. The numbers are there for Gonsalves overall in 2016 as well at Fort Myers as he is 5-3 with a 1.93 ERA in ten starts. Other numbers to highlight for Stephen's season include a .181 batting average against, 0.92 WHIP, and strikeout to walk ratio of 58/18. Any day now could be the day that Gonsalves gets that promotion call to Double AA Chattanooga.
Chattanooga Lookouts (AA) - Leonardo Reginatto (SS) - Our star from the Lookouts this week is Lenorado Reginatto, shortstop for Chattanooga. Reginatto's name doesn't get mentioned much in the talk regarding the Minnesota Twins middle infield depth in the organization as names such as Jorge Polanco and Nick Gordon usually dominate the discussion. If Leonardo continues to play like he has this season and especially this past week, he will force the conversation to enter his name is the discussions as well. This past week Reginatto batted .379 (11/29) with 4 R, 1 2B, and 6 RBI. Leonardo's numbers are impressive for the 2016 campaign at Chattanooga as well, hitting .305 with a .366 OBP. Reginatto is also second on the Lookouts roster in runs scored and batting average, making him overall a very interesting prospect to watch in terms of moving to Rochester in 2017 and involving himself in that middle infield discussion.
Rochester Red Wings (AAA) - Jorge Polanco (SS) - This week's star from the Red Wings is Jorge Polanco, shortstop for Rochester. It must be the week of the shortstop in the Minnesota Twins minor league system as three of the four minor league stars of the week are shortstops this week. Just as Sean Miller and Leonardo Reginatto were deserving, Jorge Polanco is as well with his play this past week. For the past week Polanco batted, .379 (11/29) with 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, and 3 RBI. The season at Rochester has been no slouch for Jorge either as he has batted .330 on the 2016 season, sporting a .382 OBP. With Buxton back at Minneapolis and looking at players that have enough at-bats to qualify, Polanco currently leads the Red Wings in batting average and will continue to push the Twins organization to give him another chance in the majors, hopefully with some more playing time included in that opportunity.
