Pirates 4, Twins 1: Another rough outing for Phil Hughes

Another day, another lead-off dinger given up by Phil Hughes.

MLB: Minnesota Twins at Houston Astros
Stop giving up those damn dingers, Phil!
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Phil Hughes had another rough outing today for the Twins. Though he lasted six innings, Hughes gave up four earned runs, including two home runs in the frickin’ first inning. Stop with the lead-off dingers, would you Phil!?!

The rest of the Twins pitching was great. Michael Tonkin gave up only a walk in his inning or work, and Taylor Rogers gave up only a hit in his.

On the offensive side, Miguel Sano hit a dinger off Pirates starter Ivan Nova. That was, uh... basically it. Seriously. The Twins only got four other hits—all singles, and all by non-starting players (except for ByungHo Park, who is awesome).

  • If you didn’t even notice this game was on, I don’t blame you. Total time of game? 2:10!
  • Jason Castro made a great throw to catch Alen Hanson trying to steal second base.
  • This is the first game Jason Castro has caught Phil Hughes all spring.
  • With only three spring training games left, the Twins said Phil Hughes will start a minor league game before the season starts.
