In game 1 of today’s doubleheader, Phil Hughes did not have his best stuff. The trouble started in the 2nd, when Salvador Perez hit a deep 2 run homer to left center to give the Royals a 2-0 lead.
In the 4th, another 2 run homer, this time by Jorge Bonifacio made it 4-0. The next batter, Brandon Moss decided to join the fun and hit a solo homer to make it 5-0. Hughes did not pitch in the 5th, as Adam Wilk replaced him.
The Twins finally decided to start scoring runs on Jake Junis. With 1 out, Jason Castro and Byron Buxton walked and then Brian Dozier singled to score Castro for the first run. Later, a 2 out Miguel Sano single scored Buxton to make the score 5-2.
In the 7th, a 2 run double by Sano brought the score even closer at 5-4, but the Twins were once again unable to get that extra hit to take the lead.
In the 8th, Brandon Moss hit another solo dinger for an insurance run. It turns out they wouldn’t need it, as the Twins offense went silent in the 8th and stranded two more runners in the 9th to end the game. Final 6-4, Royals.
