Hector Santiago started the day ok, allowing just 1 hit through the first two innings, but disaster struck in the third. Alex Gordon got hit by a pitch, then Whit Merrifield doubled him in. With 2 outs, Eric Hosmer hit an RBI double to score Merrifield, and Salvador Perez hit an RBI single to put the Royals up 3-0.
Santiago came out for the 4th but a walk and an out later, he was relieved by Phil Hughes out of the pen. He gave up a double and a single, both scoring a run to push the deficit to 5. Some relief that was, am I right?
The Twins couldn’t do much today against the Royals starter Travis Wood, who hadn’t started a game since 2015. They finally broke through in the 5th, after stringing a few hits together. Brian Dozier and Robbie Grossman picked up RBI singles, but the rally was killed by a bases-loaded ground ball double play by Eduardo Escobar.
The Royals added a third run off of Phil Hughes on a double followed by a single to make it 6-2 after 5 innings.
No runs scored after this point in the game. So good job, bullpens!
