A’s 6, Twins 5: Alonso hits walk off homerun

Bartolo Colon was pretty good but the bullpen and offense let him down.

The Twins jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. Brian Dozier smacked a solo dinger, and Eduardo Escobar crushed a 2-run blast to right-center.

We got single runs in the 3rd and 4th to push the lead to 5-0. In the third, Joe Mauer hit a sac-fly, and in the 4th Robbie Grossman walked with the bases loaded for an RBI.

Once again, Bartolo Colon was good early but struggled as his day went on. In the 4th, the A’s struck for 2 runs on a pair of doubles and a sac fly. They added another run in the 5th on a Jaycob Brewman solo-shot.

Colon settled down, though, and pitched a 1-2-3 6th inning. He came out for the 7th, and got an out but left with runners on 1st and 2nd. Matt Belisle did a nice job of cleaning up that inning with no runs scoring.

Taylor Rogers came in for the 8th and gave up a couple baserunners. Ryan Pressly came in and gave up a game-tying two-run double. Not a good two games for Rogers, who gave up the walk-off home run yesterday.

The A’s started their bottom of the 9th with a double by Matt Joyce off of Trevor Hildenberger. Hildy was able to work out of it though, finishing the inning by striking out Khris Davis.

To extras we go!

I’ll remind you that the Twins have had a lot of trouble scoring passed the 5th inning lately.

Hildenberger stayed in for the 10th, giving up a leadoff single, but he struck out the next three batters.

Miguel Sano was ejected in the 11th inning after getting called out on strikes (it was a ball) and throwing his bat down. Phil Cuzzi’s strike zone was truly terrible today, and it was only a matter of time before someone spoke up about it.

There was a discussion about seagulls on the broadcast, that was fun.

Then Yonder Alonso spanked a dinger off of Tyler Duffey to end the game in the 12th. Twins lose the series. Well, this was fun.

Joe Mauer: 2-5, 2B

Ehire Adrianza: 1-3, 2 BB

Max Kepler: Ran himself into an out in the 9th

Phil Cuzzi: Awful (to say the least) strike zone.
