The Twins announced today that they have designated left-handed reliever Buddy Boshers for assignment. This is not a surprise. The Twins’ 40-man roster was full, but they needed room for newly-signed pitcher Addison Reed. Buddy’s spot was the most obvious one to use.
Why? Because Buddy isn’t that good. Over 35.0 innings in the majors last season, Boshers posted a 4.89 ERA with 28 strikeouts. He was frequently shuffled between the majors and Triple-A Rochester, where he posted a 3.68 ERA with 15 strikeouts over 14.2 innings.
The question now is, will Buddy Boshers be claimed? I’m leaning towards no, though some team might take a flier on him considering how slow the offseason has been. A new team could easily just DFA Buddy again if they happen to make a free agent signing and need a roster spot.
By the way, the Twins’ deal with Addison Reed is now official: two years for $16.75 million. Reed is the first relief pitcher the Twins have signed to a multi-year deal ever.
