Starter Jake Odorizzi had been pitching well as of late, but tonight he reverted back to his old self allowing 4 runs in just 3 IP while dealing with control problems and a quickly rising pitch count all night.

He got some early help from Twins bats though with a 3-run 1st inning, including a 2-run dinger by Tyler Austin, his 17th on the year. Johnny Field added another run in the 2nd with his first of two HR’s on the night, giving the Twins a 4-1 lead.

The Tigers chipped back adding a couple more runs in the 3rd, and threatened in the 4th with the bases loaded and no outs with ended Odorizzi’s day. Tyler Duffey came in to put the fire out, and Detroit ended up only getting one run out of the deal.

After Field’s second blast in the 4th, the Twins broke things open with a 5-run 5th. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, Chris Gimenez drove in two on a single. A couple batters later Jorge Polanco followed that up with a bases clearing triple to make it 11-4.

It was a very long and slow paced game clocking in at 3h36m, and featured a few long reviews including an odd should-of-been triple play by the Tigers, which they totally botched and only got one out. After Robbie Grossman was called safe on the play, old friend and now Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire came out to have a long, long chat with the umps, though he didn’t get ejected. But it was nice to see Gardy up to his old antics.

From there both bullpens shut the opposing team down, speeding up the pace of the game from a crawl to a slightly faster trudge. The series wraps up tomorrow night at 7:10PM.

Note: According to insider information in the gamethread comments this was Molitor’s 300th managerial win. So congrats to Molly!
