The window just opened, and it won’t be closing any time soon.

It was announced yesterday afternoon that the Minnesota Twins would be extending Chief Baseball Officer Derek Falvey and General Manager Thad Levine through 2024. They were originally under contract until 2021, but the organization decided to reward the duo for their success and make sure they are here for a long time.

The two executives were brought into the Twins organization three years ago, after the miserable 2016 season. Their impact was immediately felt as the Twins reached the playoffs for the first time since 2010 before ultimately losing to the Yankees in the Wild Card game.

2018 was a disappointing season filled with injuries and under performance that ultimately led to the departure of long-tenured players like Brian Dozier and Eduardo Escobar. The down year also resulted in Paul Molitor being fired and Rocco Baldelli hired as manager.

The full effect of Falvey and Levine was felt in 2019 as coaches they hired like Baldelli, Wes Johnson, Derek Shelton, and James Rowson were all part of one of the best groups in baseball. This year they oversaw breakouts from guys like Byron Buxton, Miguel Sano, Max Kepler, Mitch Garver, and Jorge Polanco. Everything broke right for the Twins in 2019, and their front office staff earned these extensions.

Time to live up to expectations

Last off season, when the duo was asked about going after big name free agents, they basically replied they would do that when the window to win was wide open. They were only beginning to crack it open last season.

Now, coming off a 100 win season and their first division title since 2010, it is time to live up to those words and bring in the talent to push this team to the next level. They said this year that they can now feel a breeze from the hypothetical window so hopefully they are ready to do what it takes.

This is the off season Twins fans have been waiting for, and this is the type of situation Falvey and Levine were hired for. They were criticized at the trade deadline for their lack of activity, and if they take the conservative route again this off season they will once again be criticized. I believe fully in what they have done and I think they will make the right moves this winter.

What do you think? Do you trust Falvey and Levine? Are you happy they were extended?
