A recap of the Twins’ first 50 home runs of 2019

Dongs aplenty for the good guys

In the Twins’ 26th game of the 2019 season, Ehire Adrianza sent a Justin Verlander fastball over the right field seats, the team’s 50th home run of the year. In addition to providing the sole run in Minnesota’s 1-0 victory, that homer set a franchise record for the fewest number of games to reach 50 dingers.

We’ve witnessed barely a month’s worth of baseball, and the team with Kasota gold trim on their jerseys has walloped enough four-baggers to make us forget the moonshots that came just as the calendar was turning to April. As such, it has become a public duty to remind Twins fans of each and every circuit clout.

First, a few observations:

  • The Twins have gone back-to-back a surprising amount. I counted four times that Minnesota followed up a tater with another tater - and that doesn’t even include the back-to-back-to-back jacks against Baltimore.
  • Both of Willians Astudillo’s long bombs have come as the trailing end of back-to-back swats.
  • The Twins have only hit a couple deep shots that took the team from behind to ahead, or tied a game which they were trailing. That said, the Twins haven’t been trailing as often this year.
  • A big part of the high tally of Ruthian blasts is those games where trots came a-plenty. The Twins have already played four games in which their batters sent at least five balls out of the park - two with five (both against Baltimore), one with six (victimizing the Mets), and one with eight (Baltimore again).
  • In two games, Minnesota swingers touched ‘em all seven times with Orioles hurler Alex Cobb on the mound.
  • It’s a real shame that the Twins have completed their season series against Baltimore.
  • The Twins have leading off several innings by going yard, including all three wallops smacked in the past two games.. Having Max Kepler as their leadoff man makes that possibility more likely in the first inning.

On to the list. All information was found via Baseball-Reference and @DingerTracker. (I was unable to find the distance for Mitch Garver’s big fly in the walk-a-thon loss to New York.)
