Today’s pitching matchup will feature Angels starter Tyler Skaggs and Twins ace Jose Berrios. Skaggs comes into the game with a 3-3 record and a 4.70 ERA, posting two quality starts in his six appearances this year. He got roughed up in last outing, giving up eight hits and seven earned runs over 4.2 inning against the Tigers.
Jose Berrios has been excellent this year for the Twins, sporting a 6-1 record with a 2.53 ERA. Berrios mostly recently dropped seven shutout frames on the Toronto Blue Jays, and has gone at least six innings in all eight of his starts. He has also posted seven quality starts, and is averaging just under a strikeout per inning.
The Twins haven’t had much experience against Skaggs in the past, with the most at-bats coming from Nelson Cruz, who is out of the lineup today. That might be okay for the Twins, as Cruz is just 2-23 (.095 BA) against Skaggs. Marwin Gonzalez is the next most tenured Twin when it comes to facing Skaggs, and the former Astro has had quite a bit of success. Gonzalez has gone 7-12 against the Angels lefty, including a double. The full team stats against Skaggs can be seen here.
Interesting fact of the day for you: Mike Trout has an .873 OPS against the Twins. That’s a pretty good number, but it ranks last in comparison to his OPS against all other American league teams.
