Facebook reacts to Joe Mauer’s number retirement

This is the song that never ends, it just goes on and on, my friends...

As all of you most likely know, Joe Mauer’s number 7 was retired by the Twins on Saturday. It was a time of reflection on what most everyone in Twins Territory agreed was a great baseball career. I say “most everyone” because there is a very vocal subset of Twins fans who think that Joe Mauer was not a good baseball player. Most of them voice their opinions on Facebook and Twitter, and there were quite a few of these folks who just had to make sure that everyone heard how they felt about Joe Mauer’s career.

I usually don’t make fun of people for making typos, because it happens, people make mistakes sometimes. But.... nobody has ever won a “World Serious ring.” Typo aside, according to the Baseball Hall Of Fame website, 83 of the 226 MLB inductees into the Hall never won a World Series. So obviously, most inductees have won a championship, but it’s not exactly a requirement.

$23 MILLION A YEAR!!!!!!!

Sure, the Twins are having a historic year on offense. Yes, their starting pitching is as good as it’s been in several years. But we all know the REAL reason why the Twins are succeeding this year is.... because they don’t have Joe Mauer?

This is actually an animated GIF, posted underneath the video of #7 being retired. I assume that the person who commented this thought it would be a really clever way to say “good riddance” to Joe. If posting GIFs in Facebook comments is what counts as clever these days, then I guess I’m not clever.

Oh yeah, Greg Gagne wore #7 too! But I’m pretty sure most people think of Joe Mauer when they think of a Twins player who wore the number 7. It’s not like people are going to go to Target Field, see the number 7 in right field, and say, “who’s that for, Denny Hocking?”

For a lot of Twins fans, Joe Mauer’s walk up song “What You Know” by TI became iconic. Greg decided it was important to let people know how much he dislikes rap. Everyone knows that a key component of any good song is simply having a guitar in it “at some point.” Greg probably approves of Brian Dozier’s song choices.
