Entering today’s game, Martin Perez had strung together a couple of decent starts. Both resulted in wins, and he looked to continue that trend today against the Tigers.
After a 1-2-3 first inning, the Tigers picked up a couple base runners in the 2nd. Perez was able to strand both of them.
The Twins lineup got their first pair of runs in the 3rd, after a Jonathan Schoop walk and Mitch Garver double. Later, Nelson Cruz would hit an RBI ground-out to make it 2-0, Twins.
After a 1-2-3 top of the 4th, C.J. Cron golfed a 3-run homer (21) to center field, opening the game up to 5-0.
The top of the 5th was the only trouble inning for Perez today, as Jordy Mercer and John Hicks doubled to score a run, and Harold Castro hit a 2-out single to score a 2nd run.
A 1-2-3 top of the 6th ended Martin Perez’s day, his final line was: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. One of the better starts we’ve seen from him lately.
Jonathan Schoop got the lead back up to 5 with a 2-run homer to left (18) in the bottom of the 6th inning. That brings the Twins season total to 253. The current record is 268 set by the Yankees last year.
The 7th and 8th innings belonged to Cody Stashak, who did well. Lewis Thorpe didn’t do as well in the 9th, allowing 2 runs, but eventually worked his way to the final out.
With Cleveland losing in 10 innings to the Royals today (9-8), the Twins lead in the ALC is back to 3.5.
