Minnesota Twins designated hitter and Bomba Squad commander Nelson Cruz ended up leaving last night’s game against Cleveland during an at-bat in the fourth inning. By the end of the night, it was announced he was ruled day-to-day. The team also announced that more information would be provided today regarding his status for the immediate future. A lot of concern with Twins Territory was that this is the same wrist that he injured earlier in the year that saw Boomstick land on the Injured List.
Unfortunately, the “more information” part is that Cruz has been placed on the 10-day Injured List. Boomstick has played in 87 games so far this season for the Twins, hitting .294/.384/.650 (1.035) with a team-leading 32 bombas and 76 RBI. He’s also hit two three-homer games and had has had one streak each of a four games and five games in a row with a home run.
To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, the Twins have opted to re-call righty Cody Stashak from AAA Rochester. Stashak was optioned down earlier this week to make room for Kohl Stewart so that he could be a fresh arm in the bullpen. It doesn’t look like Stashak has pitched at all since being optioned back down to Rochester, where he has a 1.61 ERA across 12 games and 22.1 innings of work. The bulk of his work has been in AA Pensacola, and combining the number from both levels, he’s posted a 3.38 ERA in 50.2 innings, with a WHIP of only 1.046 and a K/9 of 12.6. In the bigs, he currently owns a 5.87 ERA over 7.2 innings, allowing 13 hits, five earned runs, nine strikeouts, and no walks.
I think I’m not the only one saying, “Get better soon and very soon, Cruz.”
