Darwinzon Hernandez threw 29 pitches and got one out as the opener, before old friend Martin Perez came in as the bulk pitcher and gave Boston six innings. Hernandez loaded the bases in the first inning, but the home team didn’t score. The visitors did score in the first though, with Randy Dobnak giving up two singles (to Devers and Bogaerts) and a double (to Verdugo.) You never make the third out at third—but Verdugo did, getting gunned down by Byron Buxton to end the inning after picking up two RBIs.
Boston scored two more in the fourth, this time starting, rather than ending, on a Verdugo at-bat. He picked up a single this time, and was joined by Benintendi on a walk. A couple batters later, Jonathan Lucroy brought them both in with a two-run double that dug Randy Dobnak a 4-0 hole.
Martin Perez finally looked mortal in the sixth inning. He walked Nelson Cruz, then after Rosario grounded out, Josh Donaldson brought the rain. His 411-foot bomba cut the deficit in half. Sano, Arraez, Buxton, and Garver all hit consecutive singles, with Sano scoring on Buxton’s. Jorge Polanco brought Arraez home with a big sac fly to tie the game.
Matt Wisler came out in the top of the ninth to start his third inning of work. Perhaps that was too much for him, a double chased him from the game with a runner in scoring position. Trevor May came in, and allowed the go-ahead run to score before ending the inning. May gave up a walk to put Devers on base in the ninth, before being replaced by Sergio Romo, who gave up a RBI double for the insurance run.
