When you face someone like Dallas Keuchel, you have to be sharp, as you aren’t likely to get a lot of run support. All-too-often this season, Jake Odorizzi pitched alright, but didn’t get that run support. Today he didn’t have his best stuff, and it showed. He only gave up four runs, but Keuchel only gave up two.
The Twins struck first today, putting a run on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Miguel Sano led the inning off with a single, and moved to second when Nelson Cruz hit into a productive ground out. Eddie Rosario hit a single over the second baseman’s head that Sano was able to score on from second.
The two pitchers traded runs in the third. Jake Odorizzi walked the first man he faced, Tim Anderson, and the walk haunted. Yoan Moncado’s single put Anderson on third. He then scored to tie the game on a 6-3 groundout by Jose Abreu.
The Twins run in the bottom of the third came in a much simpler way. It was bomba time! Jorge Polanco hit a line drive 450 feet into left-center field to retake the lead.
The fourth inning was where Odorizzi got into trouble. Luis Robert took a lead off walk, and after Yasmani Grandal struck out, Edwin Encarnacion was hit by a pitch and Nomar Mazara walked to load the bases without putting a ball in play. A single by Danny Mendick scored two runs and a double by Yoan Moncado brought in another, for a total of three in the inning, and a permanent lead for Chicago.
Yoan Moncado hit a solo home run to open the seventh against Zack Littell, to sum up the scoring for the afternoon.
Notes
- Fernando Romero has to come off the restricted list, and was DFA’d
