Preface, for those who don’t know: the ‘T’ in TJ stands for Tyler, so I can say this.
Guys named Tyler are all screw-ups. Its a fact. A whole spate of late-eighties parents cursed their children with the popularity of that name.
Tonight, Tyler Duffey proved it was true.
But first, we must check in with another name beloved of late-eighties parents: Jake.
Jake as in Jake Odorizzi, who pitched one hell of a game. He allowed two runs to score on five hits in eight-and-two-thirds innings pitched. He struck out ten, walked one, and allowed one home run.
The one homer came in the second inning, with two out, and Buster Posey stepping into the box. Posey unloaded on the first pitch, and crushed it to left-center. The other run that San Francisco got off Odorizzi was in the seventh. Austin Slater singled at the end of a 12-pitch at bat, went to second on a groundball out hit to third, and scored on a single that Brandon Crawford dropped between Donaldson and Rosario.
The Twins finally got on the board in the eighth inning. Luis Arraez hit a lead-off double. Byron Buxton brought Arraez home with a line-drive single.
Odorizzi got the first two men in the ninth inning out, and then Tyler Duffey came on to face Pablo Sandoval. The Panda watched Duffey’s first offering, a ball, and then turned on the second one. He laced a line-drive home run to left, to give the Giants another two-run lead.
Marwin Gonzalez hit a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the ninth for the Twins to bring us to our final score.
Notes
- The opposite of Odorizzi today, the Giants used a bullpen day, and a total of five pitchers.
