Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Nelson Cruz is a freak of nature and he helped carry the Twins to a win tonight. Once again he proved why he is so valuable to this team by hitting two home runs in a key win.
The game started out as a pitchers duel for both sides. Matt Wisler/Devin Smeltzer vs Kris Bubic, the matchup we all expected to be a pitching duel. After three great innings from both pitchers, the Twins finally broke out with the first run on a Nelson Cruz solo bomb. Later that inning Byron Buxton drove in Max Kepler with an RBI single to make it 2-0 Twins.
Later in the game Max Kepler stepped up after a loud double from Miguel Sano and singled to make it 3-0. That wasn’t quite the end for the offense as Nelson Cruz would hit yet another homer in the 7th to make it 4-0. That was his 8th homer already.
The opener/primary for the Twins did their job, going 4 2⁄3 shutout innings with just one hit allowed and six strikeouts. Matt Wisler got his first opportunity as the opener and did great. Devin Smeltzer has been used as the primary for most of the season and he also did great tonight.
After Smeltzer left it was up to the rest of the bullpen to get the job done. Tonight that consisted of Tyler Clippard, Tyler Duffey, Trevor May, and Zack Littell. All three did well, escaping a couple jams ultimately getting to the 9th inning with a four run lead. Littell then entered for the final inning. Things did not start out well as Hunter Dozier immediately went deep. Luckily Littell was able to settle down and get a game ending double play on a line drive.
