Following widespread civic violence over a police shooting of an unarmed African-American man in Wisconsin & a murder-suicide involving an African-American man in Minneapolis where possibly a police officer was the shooter (I am unclear on the details here and will update if I learn more), today’s Twins/Tigers game in Detroit has been rescheduled for tomorrow at 12:10.
American history students will know that Detroit is no stranger to civic violence because of community frustration over how police departments are administered/operated. There’s actually a statue outside Comerica Park about this, and I will make mention of it tomorrow. As to today, per excellent MLB.com beat reporter Do-Hyoung Park:
“I know we’re starting to see things we’ve never seen before, and I think that’s a good thing,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said on Thursday. “I think we’re learning a lot about the power and influence that we have and we obviously saw that in the NBA. We saw it in Major League Baseball today so we’re going to continue to watch and continue to converse and discuss everything related to what’s going on because we do have that influence.”
Several prominent NBA stars have refused to play right now and some NFL teams have canceled practices. (Not the Vikings.)
I guess, as of noon tomorrow, the underlying local and national issues will be... all better?
I’m going to listen to Henry Lake on WCCO now.
