Old Friends on the move

Where did former Twins end up at the trade deadline?

Once a player has played for the Twins, even a cup of coffee, we tend to call them old friends. Just like you keep a few folks from high school on your Facebook friends list to keep tabs on them (high schoolers reading this, you too will someday be an old) we too like to keep track of what our old friends are up to.

With yesterday afternoon’s trade deadline being the only one this season, no one else will be switching teams via the old swap-er-oo. So now that the dust has settled, where are they now?

C Jason Castro

Old Team: Angels | New Team: Padres

Castro was the Twins backstop from 2017 to 2019. He stays on the west coast, but joins a serious contender in the Padres, leaving the under-performing Angels. Halos Heaven has more details here.

SS/2B Terrin Vavra

Old Team: Rockies (minors) | New Team: Orioles

He’s technically not a former Twin, but as he is not only a product of the University of Minnesota, but also the son of long-time Twins coach Joe Vavra and brother of former Twins farmhand Tanner Vavra, we’re going to count him as an old friend. If you were curious, Tanner is currently playing in the American Association, just deepening that connection between Twins Territory and the Vavra family. Terrin is part of the return for Baltimore on Mychal Givens. Here are the details from Purple Row and Camden Chat.

SP Tommy Milone

Old Team: Orioles | New Team: Braves

If you’ve been focusing exclusively on central division teams, you might have had a “huh, he’s still playing” reaction here, but Milone is actually putting together a pretty nice season. He’s acquitted himself well in six starts for the moribund Orioles, and Atlanta desperately needed pitching. Milone pitched for the Twins in 2015 and 2016, and Atlanta will be his sixth MLB stop since then. Here is more from Camden Chat and Talking Chop.

SP Dereck Rodriguez

Old Team: Giants | New Team: Tigers

Okay, so not a trade, but he did move teams on deadline day as Detroit picked up Son-of-Pudge on a waiver claim. The former Twins farmhand finally reached the majors with San Francisco, but has been ineffective in a couple bullpen appearances this season. He was DFA’d on the 27th, and was picked up by one of his dad’s old teams. Since it happens to be a division rival we face a lot still, its worth mentioning as well. Rodriguez will report to the alternate site for now.
