The Twins’ batters go up against boy-band hero Shane Bieber today (weather permitting), and he’s been having about the best year anybody has had in 2020. He throws a 93-94 fastball, middling changeup, and very effective breaking stuff. His numbers have improved in each of his three MLB seasons, but this season, they’re positively ridiculous:
That OPS against left-hitting batters, and Kenta Maeda’s BAbip, are completely bananas, something’s gotta give.
I could find absolutely jack-all weird facts about Mr. Bieber. He seems to be completely and utterly normal. Born and raised in Laguna Beach, CA, went to college at UC Santa Barbara. But, if you measure driving distance on I-5 between those two places, and roughly cut it in half, you get Los Angeles. Is there anything or anyone weird from Los Angeles? Why, as it just so happens, yes!
I’ve noted lately that there are a few fans of the television show Psych here on TT. (For those unfamiliar with it, it’s about a detective with a Sherlock Holmes-level of attention to detail who pretends he’s good at solving cases via psychic superpowers, also his partner who knows the truth, won’t tell anyone, and is an outstanding tap dancer.) Did those fans know that regular Psych performer Corbin Bernsen has a thing for snow globes?
Not just a few snow globes – he has thousands upon thousands of them. According to him, he got into the habit back when he was doing publicity tours for LA Law, and as a celebrity in a popular television program who played a irrepressible horndog (that character probably broke every law of the California state bar, but whatever), he could sleep with groupies, or go find more snow globes. Since he was in a committed relationship, he chose to find snow globes. (My half of a relationship found this detail out this week and thought it charming.)
Go ahead, look it up! Corbin Bernsen + snow globes. It’s absolutely true. Also Shane Bieber & Kenta Maeda are pretty good at pitching, that’s your hard-hitting Baseball Wisdom for today.
