So far this off season, the Twins have lost Trevor May and Matt Wisler from their 2020 bullpen, while Sergio Romo also seems fairly unlikely to be returning. Given these departures, its natural to assume the Twins will be looking for some help in the later innings, and they have been connected to a former all-star by a couple of well-connected reporters.

The Twins are supposedly interested in Alex Colome

It looks like Doogie was first, and his report contains more detail on where things stand between the Twins and the pitcher.

What is most notable here is the fact that the team and player are still a long way from a formal offer. Things can sometimes move fast, but in this case, don’t be surprised if the Twins are slow to make a bullpen move. Wolfson does note that the Twins have been quietly talking to a number of as-yet unnamed free agents.

Robert Murray, as a less hyper-local writer, also throws several other teams into the mix for Colome’s services.

Colome, a 32-year old righty, debuted with Tampa in 2013 and, as Murray notes, his time there crossed paths with current Twins Manager Rocco Baldelli. Colome pitched for the Rays until a 2017 mid-season trade sent him to Seattle. Also in that trade—Denard Span. The Mariners traded Colome to Chicago after the 2018 season, and he’s spent the last two seasons pitching for the White Sox before this, his first foray into free agency.

In 2020, Colome pitched 22 innings with a 0.81 ERA, but this is an obviously small sample. His career ERA is somehow only 2.95 though, despite some pedestrian looking peripheral numbers. Down drastically since his 2019 peak, in 2020 his K/9 (6.4 in 2020, 8.1 in 2019) and BB/9 (3.2 in 2020, 3.4 in 2019) with the Sox are surprising, and he drastically outperformed his FIP (2.97 in 2020, 4.08 in 2019.)

What do you think about the idea of the Twins signing Colome?
