Twins 13, Royals 4: In play, run(s)

Well, that was awesome.

The fun began in the third inning, when the game was still tied 0-0. Andrelton Simmons hit his first home run in a Twins uniform to make the score 2-0 Minnesota. After that, Byron Buxton’s blazing speed cost the Royals another run, scoring Luis Arraez after a throwing error by third baseman Hunter Dozier (no relation to Brian.) Alex Kirilloff somehow drove in a run on a ball that stayed in the park on a sac fly that scored Josh Donaldson. Just like that, it was 4-0 Twins. They weren’t done yet. After Buxton and Cruz reached, we had ourselves a helping of Garv Sauce. Mitch Garver’s fifth home run of 2021 made it 7-0 Twins, all in the third inning.

José Berríos looked sharp to start the ballgame, only allowing three hits through his first three and 2/3rds innings. It was Kansas City’s 4th hit which got them on the board. A three run blast by Hunter “Not Brian” Dozier made it 7-3. The Royals would add on another run in the 6th to make it 7-4, and although Berríos was able to finish 6 full innings, it looked as if the Royals were about to mount a furious late comeback for a brief moment.

Three RBI extra base hits gave the Twins some insurance in the bottom of the 6th. The first was a triple from Luis Arraez, which scored Andrelton Simmons and made it 8-4. After that, Donaldson scored Arraez from third and made it 9-4. Finally, Byron Buxton doubled to center, which scored Donaldson and made it 10-4. That appeared to be all the insurance Minnesota needed to see the game out, but they would add on more in the bottom of the 8th.

After a couple relatively solid innings in relief from Hansel Robles and Caleb Thielbar, Alex Kirilloff made it in the headlines again. His three run blast in the 8th made it 13-4, his 4th home run of the series. After a supremely unlucky start to Kirilloff’s major league career, it was only a matter of time before he broke out, and it turns out all he needed was to face the Kansas City Royals. The Twins take the series two out of three, and will welcome the Texas Rangers to Target Field for 4 games starting tomorrow night.
