High-A: Palm Beach Cardinals 3, Ft. Myers Miracle 2

Well here’s some interesting news: This playoff series between the Miracle and the Cardinals was supposed to be the semifinals. However, due to Hurricane Irma’s impending landfall on Florida this weekend, the Florida State League has cancelled the championship series and declared that both winners of the semi-final series-es will be named co-champions! So the Miracle are suddenly in the finals.

And, of course, they lost Fame One of the now-championship series yesterday.

The Miracle did jump out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning thanks to an RBI single by DH Brent Rooker. However, the Cardinals tied the game up, nabbing Miracle SP Lewis Thorpe for a run in the 3rd inning. Thorpe gave up a triple to RF Thomas Spitz, who then scored on a single by C Chris Chinea.

Thorpe had a good outing overall, giving up just that one run on six hits and one walk over 5.0 innings. Unfortunately, Thorpe was replaced by RP Andrew Vasquez to start the 6th, and more trouble started. After giving up a walk and a single, Spitz got to the Miracle pitcher once again, hitting a RBI double that scored two runs. Vasquez was unable to finish the inning and was replaced by RP Tyler Jay.

Jay, for what it’s worth, did great, giving up only two hits and a walk over 2.1 scoreless innings.

The Miracle got one run back in the bottom of the 8th inning thanks to a sac fly once again by Rooker. Unfortunately, though, Rooker can’t do it all himself.

The best-of-three series continues tonight with a pair of nine-inning games at the Cardinals’ stadium in Jupiter—if needed. They won’t play the second game in the Cardinals win the first one. And yes, a doubleheader in a championship series is strange, but like I said before, Irma is coming...
