The powerful Detroit line-up was too much for Vance Worley to handle tonight.

Vance Worley lasted only 4.2 innings against the Detroit line-up tonight, giving up 10 hits, including a trio of dingers to Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, and Alex Avila that buried the Twins early on. Although initially the Twins came back to tie it 1-1 in the 2nd inning with an RBI double from Wilkin Ramirez that scored Justin Morneau, it turned out to be the only run of the day for the Twins.

Six runs in 4.2 innings, when your team is facing Justin Verlander, is apparently a bit much for the Twins to overcome.

Verlander, you win the duel--this time.

Bullet Point Highlights

Joe Mauer snapped his career-high 0-for-21 hit-less streak with a 3rd inning single off Justin Verlander. Not a home run, Joe.

Wilkin Ramierz had an impressive game today, going 2 for 3 with 1 walk and the Twins' only RBI.

Eduardo Escobar--who had been on a torrent hitting streak--went 0 for 5 today in the lead-off spot.

Anthony Swarzak pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up only 1 hit and 0 walks.

Dick Bremer kept bringing up Brad Radke, and how Radke used to give up early inning home runs, in some sort of comparison to Vance Worley's recent performances. I think Vance will be a useful player for us--but Dick, please. Brad Radke's arm is rolling over in its grave.

The game thread was a little dead tonight... Playoff hockey, anyone?

Tonight's Twins versus Tigers match-up includes a totally fair pitching duel between both teams' number one starters. Let's take a look.

Twins

Vance Worley is coming off a couple solid starts for the Twins, but is still looking for the run support to give him his first win. In his last two starts combined, Worley has pitched a solid 12 innings with 3 earned runs, but his season numbers don't look too great because of some early struggles in the frigid Minnesota air. Particularly that time he pitched 1 inning and gave up 7 earned runs to the Mets. That was fun.

Worley did a fair job against the Tigers opening day, giving up 3 earned runs over 6 innings. Hopefully his recent trend of improvement continues and he fairs even better against the Tigers tonight.

Meanwhile, Tigers ace Justin Verlander has had himself the best April of his entire career. You can look at the numbers above.

However--there is hope! Verlander apparently has had a blister on his thumb that caused him to exit his last start early (after pitching only 7 innings). He noticed it at the beginning of the game but it got worse as the game went on. The blister is supposedly healed enough to allow Verlander to pitch today--but you never know. Someone might start pushing needles into the thumb of their Verlander voodoo doll...

It's also worth noting that Joe Mauer--currently in a career-worst 20 at-bat hit-less streak--has fared okay against Verlander during their respective careerst. That is, Mauer has batted .373 career against Verlander, with 12 walks (the most he has against any single pitcher) and 3 home runs. Let's bring that up to 5 home runs tonight, Joe.
