Samuel Deduno pitched his third quality start in four outings, but by the time the offense got going it was too little, too late (i.e. the bullpen had already made the game practically unwinnable).

Despite pitching a quality start, Samuel Deduno took the loss today on his 30th birthday. Deduno pitched perfectly his first time through the Yankees lineup, and ultimately gave up three earned runs--a very surmountable deficit against the 2013 Yankees. That is, unless you're the Yankees punching bag--aka, the Minnesota Twins.

The Twins got the scoring started in the 3rd inning. Our old friend Aaron Hicks led his return to the majors with a double. He was later driven in by Joe Mauer, who actually decided to play today. Ryan Doumit singled to put the Twins on first and second--but then the Twins failed to get anything else done.

The Twins had a good chance to add on more in the bottom of the 4th inning. Trevor Plouffe led-off with a walk, followed by a double from Oswaldo Arcia. Then Chris Parmelee and Hicks struck out, and Pedro Florimon grounded out--and the Twins once gain failed to get anything else done.

The 4th inning failure may have been an omen, because the top of the 5th inning wasn't pretty. Deduno gave up singles to Lyle Overbay and David Adams (wtf kind of Yankees team IS this?), and then both subsequently scored on a double by Alberto Gonzales (seriously who ARE these people!?). Before the inning was over, Gonzales was able to score on a single by Ichiro Suzuki (ok, that's a Yankee) to make the score 1-3.

That score stood until Deduno left the game and Anthony Swarzak took over in the top of the 7th. Balls were flying all over the place in a bit of a Yankee hit-parade that ended with a two-run home run by Robinson "F#$%&^*" Cano. The way the balls were flying off the Yankees' bats, it seems lucky Swarzak only gave up four runs.

The game did get a little fun again for Twins fans in the bottom of the 9th inning, when the Twins somehow forced the Yankees to change pitchers twice. Arcia led-off with a single, followed by a single from Hicks. On first and second wit no outs, Brian Dozier hit a double to drive them both in. The Yankees then substituted pitcher Adam Warren for Preston Claiborne (I've never heard of them either); but after Mauer drew a walk, the Yankees went for the big guns--Mariano Rivera, who only had to throw two pitches to end the game.

For the Twins, it was just too little, too late.

Bullet Point Highlights

Before the game, the Twins had a special ceremony to honor the retiring Mariano Rivera--the greatest relief pitcher of all time, and even greater person. The ceremony included a video of all of the blown saves Mariano had against the Twins, and presentation of a $10,000 check to the Mariano Rivera Charity Foundation. Then the Twins gave him a REALLY sweet rocking chair made out of Twins bats he had broken (the YES announcers agreed that it was the most unique gift Mariano has been given, and it include broken bats from Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, and Kirby Puckett).

Yankees starter Phil Hughes, unfortunately, had one of his 'good' starts today. He gave up one earned run over 7 innings today against the Twins, driven in by some guy named Joe.

Joe Mauer's single in the bottom of the 3rd inning was his first hit of this home stand (this is the 6th game of the 8 game home stand).

Twins reliever Caleb Thielbar--who already held the record for the Twins pitcher with the longest score-less streak to start their MLB career--pitched a scoreless top of the <strike>7th</strike> 9th inning. Talk about <strike>clutch!</strike> really not mattering by that point.

Although only charged with one official error, Chris Parmelee looked so bad in right field tonight I was wishing Ryan Doumit was out there.

Turns out, Josh Willingham was nursing a bum left knee, or as the fancy like to say, a medial meniscus tear and bone bruise in his left knee. The Twins placed him on the 15-day DL Tuesday, retroactive to Monday July 1st when he was scratched from the lineup because of said bum knee.

The move and injury will not make it easier for the Twins to market Willingham in any potential trade before the July 31st trading deadline.

To replace Willingham, the Twins recalled center fielder Aaron Hicks. Hicks went 4 for 21 (.190) during his rehab in AAA Rochester.

Cletesanity lives for another day.

Samuel Deduno has been one of the strongest pitchers in the Twins rotation as of late, posting a 2.61 ERA over 31 innings pitched in the month of June. As noted by Brand Warne, compared to his past, Sammy has been walking many fewer and striking out slightly fewer players. So you know what that means--Sammy's been pitching to contact! Gardenhire attributed Sammy's success to his better command of the fastball.

Today is also a very special day for Deduno personally--bet you can't guess why!

Phil Hughes has been very hit or miss for the Yankees this season. He's had a handful of good starts--for example, 0 runs over 8 innings against Oakland on May 4th; 0 earned runs over 7 innings against Seattle on June 6th; and 1 earned run over 7 innings against the Mets on May 27th.

Phil's also had a handful of, well, not so good starts--for example, 7 earned runs before being pulled with 2 outs in the first inning against Seattle on May 15th; 5 earned runs over 3 innings against Baltimore April 13th; and 5 earned runs over 4.1 innings against Boston on June 1st.

His last start was one of the good ones, giving up only 2 earned runs over 8 innings against a pwoerful Rangers line-up. Which Phil Hughes we'll get to see tonight is anyone's guess.
